On Sunday evening, a few hours before the closing of polling stations and the end of the vote in the second round of the elections of the President of Moldova, in Chisinau was anxious. All the central streets were replaced by police. The day before, the security forces received “rations” cards - money for three days of round -the -clock service. And at the beginning of the week, various veteran organizations Moldova submitted applications for public events in all the central squares of the capital. Everyone was waiting for the aggravation of the situation.
Local journalists and politicians convinced me that neither Igor Dodon, who scored 32.61% of the vote in the first round, nor Mayan Sandu, for whom 36.16% of voters voted two weeks ago, would not come to terms with defeat and bring their supporters to the streets. According to the Belarusian or Kyrgyz scenario.
But at the third hour of the morning, when all the voices were already counted, and I returned to the hotel, the Kishinev center was rapidly empty. The next morning, neither the supporters of Sandu, nor the supporters of Dodon came to rallies.
Former Ambassador of Moldova to the Council of Europe and the UN, Alexei Tulbur, in an interview with Novaya, said that the threats of Dodon's supporters were “ritual dances”:
- There was a shameful failure of Dodon. As it should have been in four years of mediocre, inaccessible rule to disappoint people so much that nothing helped him:
Neither administrative resource, nor full control over several state television channels, nor unlimited financial capabilities ...
Even those who traditionally voted for another type of politicians voted for Sandu: they voted for Sandu against Dodon.
The associate of Maya Sandu, the chairman of the parliamentary faction of the Action and Justice party, Igor Gros, in an interview with “Novaya” explained that Sandu won because she was a balanced politician who does not divide people into her and strangers:
- She does not use the whole arsenal of lies that her opponent used. Sandu does not contrast the citizens of the country, does not divide them into those who live in Moldova, and those who live and work outside the country. People saw, compared, wanted and received a new face at the head of state.
At the expense of “Separation of people” - this Gros recalled the statement of Dodon immediately after summing up the results of the first round of elections, when he held a briefing on which he read the text clearly prepared by political technologists with a vague idea of the moods of Moldova citizens. The key thesis of this performance was the conclusion about the “parallel electorate”:
“We all noted last night that the diaspora is very active in these elections. In reality, this is a parallel electorate of Moldova. This electorate has its own vision and its own political preferences, and for the most part these preferences of the diaspora differ from the preferences of the majority of the population, which works and lives here in Moldova. This is what the voting results look like. This is the reality of democracy, ”said Igor Dodon.

And this statement seems to have seriously influenced the final result. Because hundreds of thousands of Moldovan citizens who work away from their homeland have parents, relatives and acquaintances in Moldova. They decided the fate of the elections. Even before midnight Sunday, when voters in Moldova itself were already calculated, even a little, a little more than a percent, but lost to Sandu. And when the protocols received from Russia and Europe began to process in Chisinau, the defeat of the current president became crushing.
And already at night, the associates of Igor Dodon - the mayor of Chisinau and the head of the government - congratulated Maya Sandu on the victory.
On Monday afternoon, Dodon also restrained Sandu. But he recalled that Moldova is a parliamentary country, and promised to begin consultations with parliamentary fractions of parliament, where Dodon's supporters are still in the most part.
And Igor Dodon said that he would dispute the results of the elections in the CEC and the court and that Maya Sandu could take office no earlier than December 25.
Alexei Tulbur believes that Dodon’s post -collection statement is a step towards confrontation:
- Yes, Sandu has no majority in parliament. But there is political authority and huge electoral support. Therefore, the dissolution of the parliament, early elections and the appointment of a new government are needed.
The leader of the “Our Party” and the mayor of the second most important of the Moldavian city - the Balti - Renato Usaty, who gained 17% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election, and before the second round he called on his supporters to vote against Igor Dodon, also believes that the country needs early parliamentary elections:
- People want it. And we will achieve the dissolution of parliament and new elections.
One of the most serious problems of the country must be corruption:
- Today, for the first time in the history of the country, people of different nationalities, speaking different languages, holding different views on the vectors of the development of Moldova, have united against corruption. Dodon lost the election because he could not help but lose. Because after the video appeared on the Internet, as Dodon takes from the Moldavian businessman Kulek, presumably with money, even children in schools call Dodon Kolkom.
Maya Sandu at a briefing on Monday announced Moldavian and Russian:
- Moldovans want a state that does not steal, does not protect thieves, correctly disposes of money collected in the form of taxes.
Which protects and respects every person, unites citizens. People want a state with strong institutions and officials who follow the norms of the law, and not to political teams, with institutions that are fighting violations without waiting for journalistic investigations.
Alas, the briefing did not provide for questions from journalists. And I wanted to ask exactly about corruption. And not only Moldavian. But also the Moldovan-Russian. The day before, I listened to the former deputy of the Moldavian parliament, the head of the Omega agency Alexander Petkov about his investigation: how did the Moldovan debt formed in the person of Moldovagaz JSC to the Russian Gazprom in more than seven billion dollars? This is despite the fact that Moldovans regularly pay for gas consumption.
There is a sequel
And for himself, and for that Transnistria.
