Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov's lawyer, Andrei Krasnenkov, did not rule out that a criminal case could be brought against the head of the Civil Assistance organization, Svetlana Gannushkina, for her statements about Kadyrov. Speaking on Echo of Moscow on December 9, Krasnenkov said that over the past few weeks Gannushkina has made a number of unfounded slanderous statements against the President of Chechnya, in particular, she stated that “Ramzan Kadyrov has planted an atmosphere of fear in the Chechen Republic during the years of his presidency, violence, lawlessness." The lawyer interpreted this statement as an accusation “of banditry, and of organizing murders of a criminal community, under all serious articles of the Criminal Code.” Krasnenkov added that he analyzed a number of recent statements in the media by the murdered human rights activist Natalya Estemirova and considered that she “did not reproach Ramzan Kadyrov, the current government in Chechnya, as harshly as human rights activists do, again referring to Estemirova.” Currently, based on Kadyrov’s statement, a criminal case has been opened against the chairman of the Memorial Human Rights Center, Oleg Orlov, who stated that Kadyrov was to blame for the death of Estemirova. Prior to this, Kadyrov had already won a case against Orlov in court in connection with the same statements.
Meanwhile, it became known earlier that Kadyrov failed to get a criminal case initiated against Novaya Gazeta for a number of articles telling about the crimes of the Chechen authorities. However, at first they didn’t want to initiate a case against Orlov either, but Kadyrov pushed it and they did.
