91-year-old Ivan Demyanyuk, sentenced to five years in prison on charges of involvement in the murder of thousands of Jews during the Second World War, died in Germany. It is reported by the Air Force. In recent months, Demyanyuk lived in a nursing home in a resort place of Bad Faylnbach in Upper Bavaria.
The process over Demyanyuk began in Germany on November 30, 2009 after it was deported from the United States. According to the German investigation, Demyanyuk directly participated in the destruction of at least 27.9 thousand prisoners in the Sobibor camp, where he served as an overseer after captivity. The German prosecutor's office demanded the sentence of Demyanyuk to six years in prison. The defense insisted on the innocence of the defendant.
In May, the Supreme Land Court of Munich found the Demyanuk deported from the United States guilty and sentenced him to five years in prison. However, the judge, due to the advantage of the accused, ordered him to release him during the consideration of an appeal to a court decision that has not yet entered into force. The defense of the convict on May 16 sent a cassation appeal against the court decision to the Federal Court of Germany. To prepare documents for transfer to the highest instance, the Bavarian court has at least six months. In general, the process of considering a complaint and preparation for the court can last about two years.
