Everything has a limit

TV journalist Svetlana Sorokina and economist and publicist Irina Yasina announced their resignation from the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights. The statement they released reads:

“The latest events - falsification of the results of elections to the State Duma and brutal reprisals against participants in protest rallies are forcing us - Svetlana Sorokina and Irina Yasina - members of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society institutions and human rights to leave the Council.
Having joined the Council, we both sincerely believed that even if we failed to stop the arbitrariness of the authorities and corruption throughout the country, then at least we would be able to help specific people and organizations. Three years of work of the Council under President Medvedev have convinced us that respect for the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens is not a priority in the activities of the Russian President and his team. The falsification of the results of the parliamentary elections, in which the people we would like to vote for were not allowed to participate at all, was simply the last straw.
Our decision was made with great respect for those wonderful people who, while remaining members of the Council, still believe in the possibility of democratic changes within the current government.”
