The head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Adjara, police colonel Avtandil Beridze, was relieved of his post on a personal request, RIA Novosti reports. Deputy Interior Minister of Adjara Anzor Dumbadze said that Beridze was guided primarily by the interests of the ministry. However, according to the deputy minister, the fact that it was "difficult to work because of the media frenzy around him" also had an effect.
In May 2004, Avtandil Beridze defiantly resigned, expressing disagreement with the policy of the leadership of Adjara. After the resignation of Abashidze, Beridze returned to his post.
