The US Ministry of Justice refused Russia to transfer convicted entrepreneur Viktor Buta. “On the part of the United States, the refusal is caused by the fact that the prisoner awaits the results of consideration of the appeal, the seriousness of the crime, objections from the law enforcement agencies, and the fact that such an opportunity is excluded due to its criminal past,” the US Ministry of Justice quoted RIA Novosti, dated November 2.
A repeated request for extradition can be submitted after the Butt is away two years of imprisonment.
The Russian side calls the issue of extradction of Bout and pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, sentenced to 20 years in the case of drug smuggling, among the key controversial moments of bilateral relations.
The Court of New York on April 5 sentenced Bot to 25 years in prison, finding him guilty of his intention to sell a batch of weapons of the Levoradical Group "Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia", as well as in an indirect intention to kill Americans. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that he would seek a bottle of Bot to his homeland as part of the 1983 International Convention on the transfer of convicted persons.
Buta’s lawyer Albert Daian said that Buta did not have a criminal past, he did not commit crimes, was not a member of criminal organizations and had no intentions to kill anyone. “His supposedly“ criminal past ”was the result of prejudices, speculation and literary fictions. My client is innocent,” said Daian. He intends to achieve the abolition of the sentence at least in terms of conspiracy in order to unintentional murder of Americans and US officials. "This is an absurd accusation - in the USA there were no precedents of a person’s conviction for a conspiracy for an unintentional murder. These are incompatible concepts," the lawyer believes.
