Go out into the closed sea

According to the initiative under consideration, the border of the republic will be moved away from the coast by 12 miles (about 20 km). It is at this distance from the coast, according to the International Convention on the Law of the Sea, that any state can establish a maritime border for itself. As Novye Izvestia writes, if Finland takes a similar step, the territorial waters of the two countries will close together, which will not allow Russia to stretch the North European gas pipeline along the bottom of the Baltic, and it will have to lay it in any case through the territory of one of these countries.
