Officials of the Kaliningrad region have developed a bill to give the region the status of a federal or federal territory. As Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes, the officials’ idea is to protect local businesses from the flow of departmental instructions that hinder the development of the Kaliningrad economy. The governor is proposed to be given the status of deputy head of the presidential administration. And at the same time, it is also planned to unilaterally cancel entry visas for guests from the countries of the European Union.
The preparation of the document was timed to coincide with the visit of President Dmitry Medvedev to the region. Governor Nikolai Tsukanov approved the document and discussed it with the president.
