Why social networks punish their users
False names, publishing images of art objects, spam and pornography. The founder of the social network analytics service Amplifera, Nat Gadzhibalaev, figured out why exactly Facebook, Instagram, VKontakte, Twitter and Pinterest block their users.

Social networks are a reflection of human relations in society. Most people understand how not to be blocked: keep one account under your real name, act within the law (without insults, threats, distribution of child porn and other abominations), do not transfer your account login and password to third parties and services, and do not distribute spam .
However, different social networks have their own characteristics.
Instagram is a fairly tolerant social network: keep track of hundreds of millions of users and billions of photos! However, there are several things that the social network does not forgive either ordinary users or world stars .
Nude photo. Instagram has zero tolerance for explicit photos - they are deleted, the user is given a warning, and repeated violations result in a ban. However, the rules have many strange exceptions. For example, images of female nipples are not allowed , but you can post a photo of children breastfeeding .
There are no restrictions on the male breast at all, even in terms of hairiness. And Instagram really doesn’t like naked children and even bans their parents’ accounts for photos of innocent belly buttons .
Self-torture. The social network does not like photos of skinny or overweight bodies, images of surgical operations, blood, cuts and other harm to health.
Law violation. Instagram will ban you for photos in which you smoke marijuana or sell human organs in bulk. In addition, the network will immediately contact the police with a corresponding statement. But you can trade weapons on Instagram - however, only in the USA.
Spam. The social network recognizes intrusive self-promotion in comments, hashtags and tags of other accounts on photos.
Insults. Complaints about insults on Instagram are considered, and the accounts of the offenders are deleted.
Other people's photos. If someone uses your photo on Instagram, you can complain , and the social network will punish the scoundrel. However, we do not recommend taking a screenshot of the violator’s account and publishing it on your own (especially with wishes to burn in hell). This may be considered an insult, and you will be banned for this.
The photo is not from a phone . Instagram allows you to publish photos only from the mobile application. In addition, it is prohibited to transfer your login and password to third parties. This means that any services for posting on Instagram violate the rules, and photos published through them may be deleted along with your account.
The situation with VKontakte is very strange. On the one hand, in the hidden corners of the social network you can find both child porn and propaganda posts for Islamic terrorists . On the other hand, you can lose your account and end up in court simply for reposting someone else’s post . There are other ways to lose a page.
Violation of site rules . VKontakte blocks spam, commercial activities, and downloading of pornographic materials. They can also be punished for an offensive avatar or page description, as well as for swearing. Violations usually result in temporary restrictions on the use of the page. A relapse will result in a permanent ban.
Breaking . If the page is in the hands of attackers and its registration data has been changed, it will be blocked.
Local bans in communities . To avoid being blocked in popular groups, read the community rules in the group descriptions or pinned posts (TJ has a separate article about rules of conduct). It is also useful to read the group dedicated to security on VKontakte.
In relation to its users, Facebook adheres to a “no matter what happens” policy. Any doubts about violation of the site rules are usually interpreted not in favor of the user. At the same time, Facebook does not spare anyone, not even show business stars, and entire countries do not spare Facebook in response.
Using a fictitious first and last name . Facebook requires you to provide only real personal information. At the same time, the social network sometimes treats this rule quite loosely (the administration deleted the account of Mark Zuckerberg’s namesake).
However, in the latest update of the rules, some relaxations appeared - users were allowed to specify the names they were used to. So, Jackie Chan can remain Chan, and not re-register as Cheng Lun.
Children . The social network cannot be used by persons under 13 years of age.
Convicted . Facebook prohibits people who have been convicted of sexual offenses from registering: rapists, seducers, pedophiles.
Sexual overtones . Sometimes the social network finds innocent photographs of children perverted or bans people for an explicit picture of the 19th century. Open buttocks and breasts are prohibited, but you can feed her, just like on Instagram.
Spam . Unwanted advertising can cost not only your social media account, but also a fine of almost a billion US dollars. Facebook prohibits the use of bots and any methods of recruiting friends and subscribers.
Copyright . Facebook prohibits the publication of any materials prohibited by copyright.
URL and userpic . Separate requirements include the page address and the content of the avatar. The URL should not contain insults, and the user's photo should not contain a call for illegal action.
Among other things, Facebook has requirements for holding promotions, sweepstakes and quizzes. They cannot be carried out on a personal or public page, calls to “like and share the post” are prohibited - everything must be done in a separate application.
Twitter has fairly clear and well-written rules of use : with warnings, explanations, everything as it should be.
Impersonation . Twitter doesn't like accounts that imitate other people or companies. The social network requires a separate indication that such an account is not official or serves as a parody. The network can also take away the @vladimirputin account from the user and hand it over to Vladimir Putin.
Account trading and verification fraud . Twitter prohibits the buying and selling of accounts, as well as the use of verification badges in descriptions or avatars. For such a violation - a ban.
Too much use . The social network doesn’t like it when people act like bots: they follow people in lists, endlessly post the same tweet or the same link. It is also not recommended to post only links, without descriptions. If you exceed your Tweet limit per hour, Twitter may temporarily limit your ability to post new Tweets.
Pinterest rules are adapted to the social network for pictures. In addition, they have one main and most terrible difference - Pinterest bans forever, without the right of pardon.
Automation . Pinterest prohibits the use of foreign automated tools to use the social network. You can only pin, repin, comment, and download pictures from Pinterest in person. But even if you manually upload many images from one URL, the social network will ask you to confirm that you are not a bot.
Copyright . Please do not upload copyrighted or pornographic images. In addition, you should not upload erotic images to open sections of the site.
Replacing the source . Every picture on social media has the URL of the page it was taken from. If you edit the pin and replace this address with the one you need, then such hooliganism will result in a ban.
