Microsoft officially unveiled Office apps for iPad at a special press event in San Francisco. This was reported by The Verge .
After years of rumors , Microsoft Word , Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power Point became available for download on the App Store. The suite of applications was officially unveiled and launched by Microsoft Office general manager Julia White as part of a special press conference by new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
The iPad version of Office is free to download, but requires an Office 365 subscription to edit documents. However, you can view and display files in the tablet version without restrictions. At the same time, in Office for iPhone, all these features are now available for free, and editing does not require a subscription.
Office for iPad is similar in appearance to Office for Windows, but has larger controls for fingertip use. The documents themselves in each individual application are stored inside a built-in file manager with support for the Microsoft OneDrive cloud service.
The company specifically notes that the iPad version of Office supports advanced text and table editing functions. In particular, it has a feature that text wraps around images, which is missing on the iPhone.
Graphs built in Excel are updated not by pressing a button, but in real time, immediately after data changes in linked cells. The spreadsheet application, among other things, has an additional numeric keypad that makes typing equations and formulas easier.
As White points out, Microsoft Office for iPad is not a port of the desktop version: every feature here is designed to be easy to manage on a small screen.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella added that Office for iPad is a demonstration of the company's commitment to Office 365. Users who pay for this subscription on other platforms get access to all the features of the iOS version of Office immediately after connecting to their account.
The minimum cost for Office 365 for personal use is $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. By the beginning of 2014, the number of service subscribers amounted to 3.5 million.
