In the two-minute video, the main character named Inori Aizawa, reminiscent of Sailor Moon, fights killer cyborgs, protecting herself with the help of a pendant with the letter “I”. Thus, Microsoft advertises the Internet Explorer 11 browser, released on October 17.
At one point, she protects herself from cyborg attacks with a pendant that symbolizes the browser's protection against viruses, and then accelerates and flies away from them using some kind of trident power - probably a reference to the Microsoft Trident engine in the Internet Explorer browser. In the end, it turns out that this is all just a rendering, and Inori Aizawa sits in front of her PC, surrounded by a Surface tablet and a Nokia Lumia smartphone, holding a yawning cat on her lap.
On her personal Facebook page , Inori Aizawa calls herself an "ugly duckling" who has finally grown up into a beautiful swan, confident in her abilities. Microsoft is clearly appealing to competition from market-leading Chrome browser: according to the latest data from StatCounter, Chrome has a global market share of 41.89 percent, while IE has 27.85 percent of the total market.
In Russia, the situation is different: according to LiveInternet, the Chrome browser has 24.4 percent, followed by Apple's Safari 4 with 14.4 percent, and Internet Explorer 10 (the most popular version of the browser) has only 4 percent of the RuNet market. Despite the presentation being original for Microsoft, which “hits” the right audience of Internet geeks, many of whom are fans of anime, it is unlikely that with one video the company can change the balance of power in the market or convince someone to switch from their usual browsers.
This is not the first time in recent months that Microsoft has been able to test out successful marketing concepts. Not long ago, the company created a fairly successful promotional video for the Xbox One, staged a zombie promotion in Vancouver, and installed a giant Surface tablet in London. The spirit of the promotions began to differ from what Microsoft had done previously: for example, in an ad for a Windows 8 tablet, it mocked the shortcomings of Siri and the iPad.
