A group of members of the US Congress appealed to the Russian authorities with a request to allow US citizens to adopt those Russian children for whom the process had already begun before the adoption of the infamous law. The Russian authorities flatly refused to meet this halfway: enough, they say, you will have to deal with those against whom court decisions have already been made. And so, they say, we tear it away from the heart.
According to US data, as Kommersant writes, from 350 to 500 orphans who have already met their failed adoptive parents from the US have become hostage to the law. The Russian government believes that there are only about two hundred such children. Louisiana Senator Mary Landrew, an adoptive parent herself, insists that the Russian government is "punishing its own children, many of whom are old enough to understand what's going on."
In response to the congressmen’s appeal, Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, said that there was no point in continuing cooperation in the field of adoption (apparently with the caveat that the agreement is valid for another year), and “the decision adopted by the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation ... was a difficult, but forced measure, dictated by the consistently unconstructive position of the US federal and local authorities.” The official claims that “cases of abuse of young adopted Russians in American families have recently become a regular occurrence” and that Russia “cannot tolerate blatant cases of lawlessness when the killers of Russian children in the United States were released right in the courtroom or they got off with suspended sentences.” .
Russia now plans to create a non-governmental organization in the United States that would collect information about the living conditions of adopted children, the newspaper writes. At the same time, the press secretary of the Russian Embassy in the United States, Evgeny Khorishko, claims that this idea was supported in Washington. Like this: first they had to complain about the lack of cooperation on the part of the American authorities, declare that the agreement had proven ineffective within a month and a half of work, and then create a special organization.
