How does a person differ from animals-including his closest relatives? Most will immediately call the absence of the tail, poorly developed wool, straightforwardness, articulate speech, the use of guns ...
As for the tail, this is, of course, a misunderstanding: it does not only do not have it, but all of the anthropoid monkeys. With the rest of the signs, everything is also not so unambiguous: for example, a small African underground rodent on the body does not generally have sections completely covered with wool (which was reflected in its name - “naked digger”). A lot of animals successfully move on two legs (for example, almost all birds, including large ones as ostriches), use and even make guns, have a complex signal system, etc. But in fact, almost all of these features (well, maybe, with the exception of unlimitedness) are not only inherent in a person, but also necessary for the unique lifestyle that he chose to himself.
However, a person has other, not striking differences from his animal relatives. And one of them is an amazingly long period between birth and maturity. Simply put, childhood.
An ordinary domestic cat at the age of several months is already capable of independent life, and in a year it can give birth to its first kittens. At the same time, its normal life expectancy is 15-17 years, and many cats live more than 20. Of course, it is difficult to compare the cat with a person: the differences are too large in size, and in nutrition, and in lifestyle. But a comparison with large omnivorous animals gives similar results. The average life expectancy of a wild boar is 12-15 years, while already in the second year of life, young pigs are able to multiply (among males, however, this happens much later, but this difference is not associated with the physiological maturity of their body, but with their physical power and the hierarchical status determined by it: in order to get a “admission to reproduction”, they need to be able to confront the fights of a murmur Sovereign males). A brown bear goes to an independent life in 15-16 months, by the age of 4 it becomes a full member of the bear community - and can live up to 50 years.
True, for wild animals, it is quite difficult to determine the average species life expectancy in natural conditions, so you have to focus on the data obtained in captivity. However, it is possible that for comparison with a person they are even more correct: after all, a modern person, like a bear or a boar in a zoo, is almost guaranteed from premature death in a predator’s teeth or from an infectious disease.
Another problem is the difficulties of determining the boundary of childhood. Until now, in our reasoning, we proceeded from the fact that childhood is the time from birth to puberty. But in many societies (including modern), adolescents of both sexes are capable of propagation long before society recognizes them adults. The same can be seen in many other species - from the already mentioned wild pigs to our relatives of gorillas. (True, a usually noticeable gap between physiological and social maturity in animals is characteristic only for males: in females it is small or absent at all.) And in some animals, the time of the onset of puberty is not severely determined and can fluctuate within a very wide range. So, for example,, depending on the living conditions of the elephants, they can ripen by both 7 and 22 years. The same applies to other anatomical and physiological criteria for growing up: for example, an adult threshold is often considered an age at which the animal stops growing, but some mammals (for example, rags) retain the ability to grow until old age.
In any case, none of the types of mammals - large or small, predatory or herbivores - childhood does not occupy more than 10 percent of the species life expectancy. For a person of a modern civilized society, where the majority survived to a natural age -related decidation, this would mean that he should achieve complete adulthood by 8–9 years. Even if you take the non -average, namely maximum duration of human life (110-115 years), childhood should end at the age of 11 years. The ideas about how old people become adults, at different times and among different peoples, they differed greatly, but 11-year-olds were not recognized anywhere.
True, in the old days (and for some peoples to this day), 14-15-year-old girls were already considered brides. Moreover, the issuance of their marriage was not like a futures transaction (like a betrothal in infancy, which also practiced in many cultures): young wives not only entered into sexual relations with husbands, but pregnant and gave birth to children. Considering such practices, it should be borne in mind that high child mortality in traditional societies forced families to give birth as many children as possible so that at least some of them could feed their parents in old age. Meanwhile, the time released at this time was limited: somewhere about 50 years or a little later in women, the ability to conceive is fading away [1] . This creates the motive to start childbearing as soon as possible - immediately, as soon as the girl is physiologically capable of him (especially since in those societies where such practice was adopted, the woman was at least young - in principle, was not recognized as a responsible member of society, so the question of her social maturity did not stand). If we take into account all the above, then for women from such societies the ratio of childhood and adulthood is not only not approaching the “correct”, but it turns out to be even more distorted: it turns out that the ripening period (even purely physiological) is almost half of the time of maturity.
Why is such a long childhood to a person?
One of the hypotheses says that this is a kind of evolutionary fee for a combination of straightforwardness with an unusually large brain. In order for a person to move efficiently and safely on two legs, the bones of his pelvis should be very rigidly fastened to each other, and the hip joint should be as close as possible to the vertical axis of the body (the further he defends from it, the more difficult it is to protect the hips from the fractures). And the huge heads of human babies require, on the contrary, a wide and elastic pelvis in mothers. Evolution overcame this contradiction with the help of a number of devices, tricks (in particular, when passing along the birth canal, the fetus makes a number of intricate turns) and compromises, one of which was the transition to the birth of actually premature children. At the time of birth, our children are much less formed than the cubs of many other animals - not only such as hares or ungulates (who have special reasons to give birth as as possible as possible and independent cubs), but also our closest relatives - anthropoid monkeys. As the famous Soviet anthropologist Elena Khrisanfova wrote, if human children were born as decorated as that of chimpanzees, then people should have occurred for 21 months - bearing in mind that only by the end of the first year of life they reached the degree of formation with which the chimpanzees are born.

However, the same chimpanzees become adults in 8-10 years, approximately the same, the terms of growing up in other large humanoids (with one exception, which we will say separately). The difference with the length of human childhood is too great so that it can be explained by it alone with the “premature” of the human child. The case is clearly not limited to the increase in one year “at the start”. In addition, in the chimpanzees themselves, the pregnancy lasts by no means for 21 months, but less than eight. So a comparison with them indicates that the “tightening” of human development begins in the intrauterine period: spending more time in the mother’s womb than the Chimpanzee cub, the human child reaches a lesser degree of maturity by the time of birth.
Another explanation (not contradicting, however, the first) is that a person, growing up, should learn a huge amount of knowledge and skills. As the famous Soviet psychologist Alexei Leontyev wrote, people in the process of evolution acquired such unique brain functions as speech, speech thinking, abstract thinking, imagination, etc., and therefore it takes a long time that these complex functions of the brain are formed. Later studies clarified: a small person not only learns to all this, as he later will learn to multiply in a column or drive a car. In a number of most important cases, the developing brain uses a special mechanism of training - imprinting (captivity).
Two words must be said about this phenomenon, since due to a number of historical circumstances many even educated people either do not know about him at all, or believe that this is a kind of private exotic form of animal behavior that is not related to the human psyche. Indeed, the idea of this specific form of training has developed mainly on the works of ethologists (and above all - the founder of this direction of Conrad Lorenz), and the phenomenon himself was opened by the teacher of Lorents Zoologist Oscar Heinrot [2] . The most famous example of this phenomenon is the response of the brood birds in the chicks, primarily in goslings and ducklings. The duckling that has just hatched from the egg from the first hours of life knows how to follow a duck-mother, and confidently distinguishes it from other ducks. The very reaction itself is congenital, but the image of the mother is not known a priori: the “mother” for him will be any fairly large moving object, first caught his eye after hatching. Duckling, grown in the incubator, can be forced to follow a person, a cat, a toy car, and the rubber ball. But after such a capture occurred, it is almost impossible to change it: a duckling whose first impression in whose life was a clockwork toy, will be considered her mother until it becomes an adult. Unlike conventional forms of learning, capture occurs once and for all, does not require any repetitions or any reinforcement and is not amenable to subsequent retraining.

Further studies of ethologists have shown that the phenomenon of imprinting in highly organized animals is extremely widely wide, and its manifestations are by no means limited to such simple and visual behavioral acts as the following reaction. Often, the seal time is distant from its behavioral consequences by whole periods of life. So, for example, in many species - especially in those where both parents take part in the upbringing of offspring - the image of the future sexual partner is formed precisely by imprinting (based on the image of the parent of the opposite sex [3] ). This process also occurs in early childhood, but its results begin to influence behavior only after puberty, that is, when a grown cub can already completely lose touch with parents.
A person during his evolutionary formation not only did not lose this amazing psychological mechanism, but also extended it to some of those areas that were traditionally considered “purely human”. In particular, it is imprinting that underlies children's development of a native language - an amazingly fast and effective and completely unimportant that an adult or at least a school -age child teaches a foreign language. Without any special efforts, as if in between, young children not only remember a huge number of words, but also learn grammatical constructions, paradigms of changing words (how one or another word sounds in different cases, numbers, faces, times, etc.) and word formation.
The fact that primary teaching the language occurs precisely by imprinting is indicated not only by its amazing effectiveness and lack of visible reinforcement, but also by a rather strict limitation of time when such training is possible. Usually it occurs in the first years of life, starting almost from birth, when the child gets the opportunity to hear human speech (and that is why mothers feel the need to constantly say something to their babies-although they not only cannot answer them, but they clearly do not understand words), and leading to a more or less full-fledged knowledge of the language most often somewhere in the fourth year of life. (Moreover, the native language for the child will forever remain the one whose sounds he heard at this age. In families, more or less regularly using two languages in everyday life, children learn both, and they manage to sort on their own, what words and constructions to which language belong to what language) if in this most productive period the child was deprived of the opportunity to hear human speech, the capture may occur later less effectively-although less effectively. But somewhere between six and eight years, this wonderful ability completely disappears: if before this age the child has not met with any human language, he will never learn to speak. Those real “Mowgli” - children brought up by animals, who again came to people at a later age, could not master human speech, in spite of any efforts of psychologists, teachers and speech therapists. The attachment to a strictly defined and, as a rule, a rather early phase of individual development (the so -called sensitive period) is a true Imprinting sign: no other forms of training today have such severe age -related frames.

The phenomenon of imprinting was studied mainly on animals. In such studies, it was possible to judge him exclusively by its manifestations in certain behavioral acts - usually stereotypical, with a very large congenital component. We still know little about how great its role in more plastic and individual forms of behavior, and even more so - in the mental processes that do not have an unambiguous external manifestation. Some experts believe that the role of imprinting in the development of the psyche is much wider than it is customary to think that this mechanism underlies the formation of a certain basic set of categories and images, the combination and adjustment of which in further life is the main content of cognitive activity. Figuratively speaking, the developing individual first of all captures some “alphabet”, through which he will “read” (that is, interpret) of the information coming from the environment [4] .
But if so, then the limits of cognitive capabilities should directly depend on the size of the alphabet. As you know, it is in a person that these possibilities are incomparably, qualitatively exceed the similar abilities of any other type of living beings. Moreover, it is the cognitive activity that makes up the main “trump card” of a person as a biological species, the basis of its evolutionary strategy. It follows from this that it is in a person that the volume of information captured should be especially large (as we recall, the imprinting of the language alone, for all its amazing imagination, is still the years). It is not surprising that the time during which a person is capable of imprinting is unusually long compared to other species.
Some authors really expressed a hypothesis that the meaning of the incredible length of human childhood is to give the child as much time as possible for capturing. One of the most direct and reasoned formulations belongs to the recently deceased outstanding Russian ethlog (and an enthusiast in the use of ethological approaches in the humanitarian region) Viktor Dolnik. “The human child needs a long childhood to stretch the period of the most effective training - the imprinting period that is possible while the formation of new brain structures continues” [5] , ”he writes in his book“ Naughty Biosphere’s Child ”.
This hypothesis captivates with its persuasiveness and inner logic: it simply cannot but be. But she does not explain everything. We have already said above that the sensitive period of imprinting is usually not just in childhood, but its earliest stages (although the information captured at this time may be present in the psyche and influence behavior throughout the subsequent life of the individual). True, as we recall, in some extreme circumstances of childhood, the ability to imprint language can persist up to 8 years. But this seems to be the deadline: at more adulthood, teaching something is not recorded in a person’s type of imprinting [6] . The ability to learn, of course, does not disappear (on the contrary - just about this age begins a period of life in which this ability is especially great), but this is already “ordinary” training, which adults are capable of. Why is the years and years after that a person remains a child?
Let's try to look at this problem on the other hand - not the adaptive meaning of a long human childhood, but possible mechanisms for the formation of such a feature during evolution.
