In the Soviet period, Furman worked in the field of the history and sociology of religion, defending a doctoral dissertation in 1981 on the topic "Religion and Social Conflicts in the United States." Since the beginning of the 1990s, Furman has been studying the formation and development of political regimes, the problems of democracy, authoritarianism and reproduction of power in the CIS. Furman becomes a leading specialist in this field, publishing many scientific and journalistic works.
Before his death, Furman instructed his daughter to prepare the publication of the collection of his key articles on the political development of the CIS countries.
