Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili in connection with a re -election to the presidency of Georgia. This was reported on the official website of Putin.
"Accept congratulations in connection with your re -election to the post of President of Georgia. I would like to hope for the constructive development of relations between our countries in the coming period," the appeal says.
Meanwhile, earlier it became known that Russia will be represented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the inauguration ceremony of Saakashvili on January 20. The day before, the President of Georgia officially invited Vladimir Putin to the inauguration.
"The official letter with the invitation of Russian President Mr. Vladimir Putin to the inauguration of the elected President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili has already been sent to Moscow," said Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of NATO PIRCHALAVA.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the leadership of Georgia had not yet received an invitation to participate in the inauguration of the Russian delegation.
“We heard Saakashvili’s statement about the desire of the Georgian side to normalize relations with Russia,” the minister said. “But there are no specific initiatives yet.”
“We expressed the willingness to discuss the ways to normalize relations,” said Lavrov. “Last year, at meetings with colleagues, I discussed the necessary steps to get off relations from the crisis. However, after that nothing happened,” he added.
