“Silence at home”-new indie heroes from Belarus, adhering to the sound aesthetics of the 1980s-make international successes. Recently, the group, which released two albums, performed at the Berlin festival Pop - Kultur 2019 , and in the fall it will have a large touring tour of Europe, which will begin large solo concerts in Moscow (September 18 in 16 tons) and in St. Petersburg (September 19 in the “heart”). We present to you a new video “Silent at home” for the song “Dance”, shot by the Spanish director Isabella Padii, who discovered a group through YouTube , and an interview with the participants in the trio.
- How did the group “Silent at home” began? In what groups did you play before it?
Roman Komogorstsev (guitar, synths): In 2010, Yegor and I studied together at a technical school, where we met. It so happened that we had the same views on music - both liked Depeche Mode and RHCP . By that time I had already played the guitar, and then I found out that Yegor was playing too. We decided to try to play together.
Egor Shkutko (vocals): We played differently: from Fank to trip-hop. Later, in 2014, we had a “no personnel” group, where I was a bass player, and Roma was responsible for the guitar and the synths, and the vocalist there was different. The first songs that MD are now appeared there (“I am not a communist”, “technology”, “silence and hide and seek”). But because of the disagreements with the vocalist, the group broke up a year later. Roman and I decided to move on and made "silent at home."
Roman: Since we did not have a vocalist, they tried Yegor in this role, and in the place of the bass player decided to find another person. Our bassists changed several times: one of our music seemed too gloomy, the other simply disappeared to play. And we were already desperate until Pasha wrote to us - that he wanted to join us. Since then we are together!
-Why did you choose the sound aesthetics of the 80s-postpank, minimal-step, synth-pop, gothic rock? Why do you think this sound is still popular?
Roman: I was always interested in that period of our history, which is called "Perestroika." And, of course, all the music, which was at that moment, was also interested. One of the first groups that I listened a lot already at a conscious age was the Kino group, and I think this can be seen both in our style and in our sound. The aesthetics of the Soviet Union - beautiful and festive, solemn, or something, are very strict in places. From some posters with slogans to brutal brain-driving architecture. But! We only like (!) The shell, but not the internal content of this era. It is important to understand.
Pavel Kozlov (bass guitar, synth): about the popularity of the sound and other things-I don’t know how popular it is in the CIS (hardly, since I got all the scoop), but in the rest of the world it did not go anywhere. Judge for yourself: What are we associated with the 80s? That's right: stagnation, shortage, censorship, then restructuring - when the usual life began to crumble and so on. These were unhappy times, in our opinion ...
Egor: ... And on the other side of the curtain, the 80s are the best time: the emergence of a new fashion, new music, this is a huge era. Therefore, most of the foreigners with whom we had to communicate and who lived at that time recall him with joy and are very sad that this time cannot be returned. Imagine what happiness was for them when they heard the group “Many at home”?
We always bypass politics issues-we are from Belarus, ha ha.
- As it seems from the side, you are trying to affect social topics in your songs (“merchants”, “I'm not a communist”). How are things really? Does the group members have some kind of social position? What beliefs are you?
Roman: Policy questions we always bypass-we are from Belarus, haha. I will say that. We have something to say, and we reflect it in our songs. These same songs that you have listed reflect our social position. Let it be a little abstract in places.
-“Silent houses” are published on a German label and work with a German Bucking agent. How did you establish a relationship with them? How does your work with them work?
Egor: When we released our first album, a message from David, the owner of Detriti, flew to our SoundCloud Records . He invited us to be published on the cassettes, to which we agreed. The circulation went out in a week. After some time, we began to discuss the possibility of the release of our second album on Vinil, but we were very afraid that the album would not shoot, and this was a risk for the label. As a result, they agreed, and now five presses have been sold, the sixth is launched, and this is just a bestseller.
Roman: We went out through the DRAB group at the Buking Agency Majesty , who, by the way, wrote that we are their favorite modern group (still hard to believe in it). Well, it so happened that we talked and they talked about our agent from Europe; We started a discussion of joint concerts, this agent said that he wanted to listen to us live, and we invited him to our performance at the Pop - Kultur festival in Berlin. After that, it remained only to discuss the details of cooperation.
- You now have a large European tour - what do you expect from him? What are your hopes and fears?
Pavel: It will be very difficult, since there are a lot of concerts, almost seven days a week. But on the other hand, this is what we wanted. The main thing is to try to get enough sleep and not to miss the transport until the next city. We hope that at least we will repeat the success of the last round.
- The main character of the clip “Dancing” is a vampire. Have you discussed his plot with the director - tried to influence the creative process? Do you have a favorite work about vampires - a book, a film, or maybe an album?
Egor: In fact, the plot and production are all directorial work. We did not order this clip, we were sent ready -made work. The girl-director saw this song visually; This is very strange, of course, but why not? The only thing we asked was to spill the hero’s genitals in the video final. The topic of vampires is far from us, and, probably, we have no favorite works on this topic.
