One of the two sentenced to death in Belarus for complicity in the terrorist attack in the Minsk metro on April 11, Vladislav Kovalev, filed a supervisory appeal to the chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus.

The court considered Kovalev to be an accomplice of Dmitry Konovalov, the second defendant in the case. Both of them were sentenced to death. Kovalev did not admit his guilt. According to the chairman of the presidential pardon commission, Valery Mitskevich, quoted by RIA Novosti, the chairman of the Supreme Court has the right to protest the verdict, and then the case will be transferred to the presidium of the Supreme Court. A decision on a supervisory complaint may take six months or longer.

According to Mitskevich, if the chairman does not lodge a protest, Kovalev’s case will be sent to the pardon commission, which can make a proposal to President Alexander Lukashenko. It should be noted that the most humane of all the rulers of Europe, the head of the only European state that retained the death penalty, has never pardoned those sentenced to capital punishment.

As a result of the explosion in the metro, 15 people were killed and more than 200 were injured. Observers noted that there are a lot of inconsistencies in the case, so the guilt of Konovalov and Kovalev is not obvious.
