The Moscow authorities came to their senses and gave consent to the anti-fascist “Committee of January 19” to march on January 19 along Tverskoy Boulevard at 19.30 in memory of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova, killed on January 19, 2009. At 20.00 there will be a rally in Novopushkinsky Square. The action, according to the organizers, will be dedicated not only to the memory of those killed. Its focus is “against politically and ideologically motivated murders, against manifestations of racism, ethnic and religious hatred, against the use of chauvinism and xenophobia in politics and public life.”
Earlier it became known that the authorities would only allow a rally at the Pushkin monument or a procession along the Taras Shevchenko embankment. The organizers were not happy with this. This refusal to hold a procession would look especially symbolic against the background of allowing the organizers of the event in memory of Yegor Sviridov to march along Kronstadt Boulevard on January 15 - it would turn out that the memory of some is more worthy than the memory of others. Let us recall that the authorities refused to sanction a similar procession in memory of Markelov and Baburova on January 19 last year, which led to clashes between those gathered and the police.
