The former governor of the Altai Territory and assistant to the plenipotentiary representative of the Russian President in the Siberian Federal District, Alexander Surikov, has been appointed the new ambassador of Russia to Belarus. Thus, the position, vacant since July 2005, is finally filled. On July 15, ex-governor of the Saratov region Dmitry Ayatskov was appointed ambassador. But after harsh statements against the Belarusian president, his diplomatic career quickly ended. Presumably, the new ambassador has greater restraint and greater loyalty towards Lukashenko.
