How it is arranged and by whom our mental space is inhabited
Our words do not lie on a clean sheet of paper, but fall into the densely populated mental space of Russian culture. This article is dedicated to the two components of this space - the conceptosphere and person of the Russian language.
The conceptosphere of the Russian language is the sphere of concepts developed by the Russian language consciousness and reflects all the wealth of the associative capabilities of the language. Thus, the concept of “carriage” for cultural Russian consciousness is also associated with the expression “carriage of the past” and even with the image of Chatsky, requiring a carriage in order to leave the Moscow society that has not accepted it. In other languages, the concept of carriage will be inscribed in the world of concepts in a different way. In our article, we will talk about the conceptosphere in connection with the analysis of a public reaction to keywords, thrown into the information space of the media.
In our opinion, along with the sphere of concepts, there is a sphere of characters, that is, those fictional or historical images that live in our minds and somehow determine our vision of the surrounding, our picture of the world. These are the images of Don Quixote, Pushkin, Nero, Andrei Bolkonsky. Folklore, religion, history, literature inhabit their characters a national person , of course, playing a cementing role in national life, but subjected to social variation and sensitively reacting to all social changes. We will talk about the Personsfire in connection with the category of “image”, uncritically and widely used in today's public life. The other side of the problem related to the idea of the national person is educational and educational.
Keywords and conceptosphere of the Russian language
Today, when modern fiction does not have a national authority, and the classic is pretty forgotten, the construction of our mental space is actively engaged in the media, and with them and through them - cinema. The monopoly position of the media strengthens the impression that the picture of the world can be written and rewritten, you just want to want it. Indeed, individual words launched into public circulation with newspapers and television live for a long time and have been awarded from the researchers the name “metaphors that we live” [1] . We are talking not only about metaphors proper, for example, “ point blows ”, but also about any conceptualization or reconception, introduced by a new or fashionable word or a combination of words (“ oligarch ”, “ adequate answer ”, etc.). The belief that language constructs concern not only our speech, but also our thoughts and actions, fuel a mistaken idea that society is ready to accept any metaphors or terms, it is enough to “promote” them properly. In reality, however, in the public consciousness, old -proven concepts have been reigned for centuries, and every new word falls into the already populated space.
In the light of the just said, it is interesting to analyze some data obtained by the Public Opinion Foundation. The respondents were invited to explain how they understand the words or phrases that are most frequently operated by the media in this or that period - such as, for example, “ default ”, “ liberal ideas ”, “ dictatorship of the law ”, “ nuclear deterrence ”, “ redistribution of property ”, “ party of power ”. These words were thrown into public space as a “designer” from which readers or viewers had to build a certain social universe. Perhaps not all these expressions were metaphorical in the exact sense of the word, but they all performed the function of "metaphors that we live." We were invited to think about life in these categories. The focus of the sociologists in the study was thus the influence of the media on public consciousness.
The data presented by the fund show how, to put it mildly, the media with public consciousness difficult to interact, how difficultly “responds” the word in it.
Consider this on the example of the phrase " Civil Society ". 40 percent of the respondents said that they hear him for the first time, 28 percent-that they heard “something”, 18 percent-“I find it difficult to answer”. It is not surprising that78 Processes of all answers fell on the heading "There is no answer, the answer is not to the topic." What are the remaining 22 percent?
One group of respondents responded to the keyword “ society ”, without perceiving the definition of “ civil ” as a designation of any differential attribute and understanding it as a doubling of the meaning of the word “ society ”. The answers of this group of respondents are as follows: “ All the people who live in the country ”, “ We are all citizens of the same country ”, “ All the inhabitants of our society are citizens ”, “ All Russian citizens - both rural workers, and residents of the city ”, etc. A really answer to about the following question: “Citizens, what are we in common?” The response reaction is quite understandable: there is a concept of general, uniting all, there is an official word “ citizens ”, also enough in common due to their impersonality, there is a memory that all of us from time to time are somehow called (for example, “ a new historical community of people is the Soviet people ”), without cope, as we call ourselves. Of the totality of all these ideas, the respondents made a very reasonable conclusion - " all the people who live in the country ." The replacement of “ people ” with “ residents ”, “ citizens ”, “ workers ” is also explained: it is set by the stylistic key of the word “ citizen ”. However, with all its logicality (from the point of view of ideas about the conceptosphere of the language), the answer, of course, indicates a communicative failure: the speaker was not heard.
The answers of the second group of respondents are close in content to the above answers. The only difference is that the moment of public unity is emphasized and evaluated positively: “ everyone is in solidarity ”, “ when the people are one ”, “ society must be united, unity ”, “ all citizens must be together, and not everyone in their own ”, “ consent of citizens ”, etc. Let us pay attention to the stylistics of the definitions. The group did not respond to the “official” word “ civilian ” and gave a more “warm” palette of meanings: “ people ”, “ unity ”, “ consent ”. The modality of obligation appears here. If the first group “pulled up” incomprehensible words to the concept of “society”, then the second - to the concept of “unity”.

Another group, which also did not take the meaning, put into the analyzed expression to the speaker, gave strange answers at first glance: “ A person should be a person, respect for a person, respect the patients, not leave them alone ”, “ Associations with humane society ”, “ take care of young and pensioners ”, “ decency and honesty ”, “ established stable moral principles ”. However, if in this case we proceed from the ideas about the conceptosphere of the language, then these answers are quite consistent. This is a reaction to the positive connotation of the phrase " Civil Society ". The course of the respondents' thought is about this: you call something good with these words, and the good is when they are considered to be people, they act honestly, respectfully. The replacement of the word “ citizen ” with “ man ” is very indicative in this group. The very first of these answers almost literally reproduces the meaning of the famous monologue of Gorky Satin about man. The most common denominator of all answers is humanity.
The next group of respondents reasoned in a similar way, but the answers were concentrated around another semantic center: “ Cultural, highly educated, healthy society ”, “ Civilized society ”, “ Fair society ”, “ Normal society ”, “ Civilized society is not like ours ”. The key to understanding these answers is, it seems, not even the expression “ civilized society ”, which has become a banner of many political disputes, but an explanation given in the last answer, “ not like ours ”. In Soviet times, the concept of a “non -flowing path” was persistently introduced into public consciousness - “ We are walking along the road, on which no one went before us .” Subsequently, many members of society began to be perceived sharply negatively. The “ non -member path ” received a counterweight in the form of “ normal life, like people, ”. In this sense, a “ civilized society ” can be read differently: here is a positive assessment of progress as such and a negative attitude to domestic experiments in the field of social construction as savagery, a deviation from a generally accepted norm.
Some respondents responded to the word “civilian” in the light of the opposition “citizen - state”: “a society where citizens are assigned a significant role, where the interests of citizens are defended” , “citizens should be in the center, and not just politicians and authorities” , “a society that thinks about citizens”.
Moving on the answers scale, we are getting closer to those who, in one way or another, confirm the expectation of the speaker. This is a group of answers, which is 10 percent of all received and reduced by sociologists in the section “Democratic Fundamentals”. These respondents consider its democratic foundations the main sign of civil society. Most of the answers are reduced under the heading "Legal society". These answers: “ The company, in which the rights and obligations of a citizen are respected ”, “ all citizens have the same rights ”, “ equal rights of all citizens ”, “ all citizens of the country must have the same rights ”, “ people who observe basic obligations and rights ”, “ every citizen is equal to be chosen and elect ”, “ people who know their rights and obligations ”, “ law is legal ”, “ law in the first place for everyone ”, “all the rules”, “ all the rules ”, Society built on the leadership of the law . " The answers gravitate towards three in general different concepts: “rights and obligations”, “equality”, “law”. The first implies a fair balance of the interests of man and society, the second is justice in relation to all members of society, the third is the prevention of arbitrariness. Other answers of the last group of respondents were placed by sociologists in the hen of the “observance of freedoms of citizens” (“freedom of speech, printing, free society”, “freedom of speech, freedom of print”, “society of free citizens”) and “democracy” (“society with democratic orders”, “power of the people”, “democracy”, “democratic society”).
Of those meanings that, apparently, were laid down in the phrase “civil society” , the meaning of “society that has reached a certain level of social maturity” was completely not realized, and only the meaning of “society supporting self-organization” was indirectly realized. The “correctness” of understanding (the coincidence of the reaction of the listener with the expectation of the speaker) begins with answers about a civilized society (subject to etymological understanding of civilization as citizenship, that is created by living in the city, “urban”).
Of course, for a more accurate comparison of the meanings of answers with the initial meaning laid down by the speaker himself, we would have to consider all the contexts in which the expression “civil society” was introduced into public space. But such procedures are done only with dead languages. We can judge the initial sense only on the basis of the idea of the contexts set by the media generalized by our own intuition. Nevertheless, the “incorrectness” of the answers seems quite convincing. Their “correctness” is just as convincing - an attempt to draw little -known to already known concepts.
The situation is completely different with answers to the open question “What is poverty? What kind of people could you call the poor? ” She did not give an answer or answered the wrong topic of only seven percent of the respondents. The concept of poverty, of course, is present in the conceptosphere of the Russian language. Therefore, the moment of communicative failure is removed here, respondents only emphasize those aspects of the concept that, in relation to modern reality, consider the main ones.
Some respondents come from the category of possible, associating poverty with the inability to acquire the necessary, others - from the category of due, believing that there is a certain minimum that should be maintained, because outside it is poverty.
The first (35 percent of all respondents) traditionally explain the “poverty” through the image of “bread” and “shelter”: “ those who have no bread for lunch ”, “ when there is no bread ”, “ there is no enough bread ”, “ there is no piece of bread ”, “ when there is no bread on the table ”, “ when they eat bread with water ”, “ those who have no bread for lunch ”, “ no shelter ”, “ when there is no shelter” roofs, no bread ”, etc.
The second (26 percent of all respondents) explain the “poverty” through the concepts of “minimum”: “ who has a welfare below the subsistence minimum ”, “ who has a salary below the subsistence level ”, “ who lives below the cost of living. Pensioners , "" income is less than the subsistence minimum "," receive below the subsistence minimum . " There are even attempts to normalize poverty (“ people who have less than 2000 rubles per soul ”, “ who has a living wage of at least less than 3,000 rubles ,” etc.). The answers indicate the viability of the concept of the “living wage”. The idea of a certain limit, metaphorically - “line” (cf.: “ Reach the point ”), behind which poverty occurs, began to form in the 19th century, possibly under the influence of the development of the written form of speech and the business language.
Some of the answers to the question of poverty could not resist the ethical assessment of this phenomenon. So, six percent connect poverty with laziness: “ poverty is laziness of a person ”, “ a poor man is always a loafer .” They understand the “poverty” as the impoverishment of the soul two percent of the respondents: “ There are no faith - these are poor ”, “ poor people in spirit ”, “ man without faith is a beggar .” One of the answers even specifically emphasizes that the main content of the concept of “poverty” is precisely “spiritual poverty”: “ spiritually poor, you can live on any salary .”
Many words of foreign origin were elementary for respondents. So, half of the respondents simply did not know what “ inauguration ” means, and one of the respondents confused it with exhumation. The word “ summit ” also caused homonymous associations: it was interpreted as the “Jewish community” (from “ Semit ”), and as “media” (from “ media ”). Most respondents could not explain this word - 71 percent.
But in the interpretation of words worked out by Russian culture, respondents found a deep sense of their native language. In focused interviews conducted in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Voronezh, the theme "Homeland" was proposed. At one time, the famous Russian philologist Academician V.V. Vinogradov warned that the high socio-political meaning of the word “ homeland ” was not known in the Pushkin era, when his native places were called the homeland, and that its modern meaning was assigned to the word “ fatherland ”. [2] However, most of the respondents, despite the fact that in recent decades, the word “ homeland ” emphasized precisely his socio-political significance, understands the “small homeland”, native places, and only then the native country, the Fatherland: “ The place where I was born. I always want to go there because the most expensive for me is connected with this: a house, parents ”,“ Motherland is a place where it was born, where it’s good, where you are loved and you love. The homeland can be not only a place (a certain city, a village), but the whole country with the traditions of your usual traditions ”,“ Probably, this is the place where a person was born and where it always pulls ”,“ You understand that for me the homeland is a house first of all and, secondly, this is the whole country, a huge, rich, multinational country ”. Recall that it is the “homeland” as a more cordial, folk concept of Lermontov that contrasts in the poem of the same name “Fatherland”. It is significant that when the moderator is sentenced to distinguish between the concepts of their homeland and the Fatherland, all groups of respondents tried to rely on the etymology of words.

In general, the desire to derive the meaning of the word from his etymology, no matter how skeptical, due to its inevitable straightforwardness, this was sometimes evaluated by educated people, seems quite natural. After all, the etymological significance is included in the semantic sphere of the concept. The words are also drawn into the orbit of the concept that have an accidental sound similarity with the studied (“ summit ” - “ seed ”). The less we understand the word, the more reasons we have to turn to etymology and even homonyms (how do we know whether the similarity of words is by chance or not?) As to sources of additional information. The attachment of synonyms or obscure shifts in the meaning arising from the change in the cultural paradigm, etymology or the fact of the word entering the winged expression become a support in search of meaning. If you ask the same respondents to explain the word " power ", we will almost certainly encounter etymologization, and someone will definitely remember the expression " I am insulting for the state ." When interpreting neologisms of foreign origin with darkened etymology, even random sound associations will certainly be used.
