In the newspaper of the Sochi city administration, “Sochi News,” as well as on television, in the “Vesti Kuban” program, information was disseminated that Nemtsov’s election campaign is being financed from the United States, which is a lie. There were several publications, they said on television that Nemtsov is financed from the United States, I wonder how he will pay his overseas masters, probably with Sochi land. Naturally, there were no refutations; we were not given the opportunity to respond to these accusations.
The activities of one and only candidate are covered - Pakhomov. In relation to the other candidates, either nothing is done, that is, their election campaign is hushed up, or a stream of lies and distortion pours in, as in the case of Nemtsov. It is obvious that Nemtsov is the main candidate, and the entire power of the government’s administrative and information campaign is directed against him.
At meetings with voters, people are really indignant that Pakhomov, in fact, is avoiding debates, does not want to have a discussion with anyone, and behaves extremely arrogantly and self-confidently. It is very clear that people are fed up with these Kuban governors, who are sent here and placed in the mayor’s chair without any alternative.
Obstacles arise constantly, they prevent us from gathering, the police are trying to find out what kind of people are gathering here. However, since we have such a partisan election campaign, meetings with voters are held in the form of spontaneous rallies, it is very difficult for the police and administration officials to do anything, since they never know in advance where we plan to gather people. We have a very mobile headquarters, district headquarters that gather people, simply go door to door, handing out leaflets with information that Nemtsov will be here in two hours. The authorities simply do not have time to react. In fact, this is the only way to conduct a campaign campaign in the current conditions, when there is no television, no radio, and no opportunity to place outdoor advertising. This is not Moscow after all, there are not so many riot police here, thank God, no one is being dispersed.
People feel an information vacuum and are happy to listen to an alternative point of view. Even if people are not Nemtsov’s supporters or voters, they still come to listen to what he says - just to have a more or less complete picture, which the residents of Sochi are deprived of today.
