Meme: just do it

A student project with the participation of actor Shayia Labafa turned into a popular meme with hundreds of videos and millions of views

A student project with the participation of a popular Hollywood actor Shayia Labafa turned into a popular meme with hundreds of videos and millions of views. TJ figured out the origin of the joke and chose the best videos made by network users.

In early May, actor Shayya Labaf, together with the artists Luke Turner (Luke Turner) and Nastya Sade Rönkkö from Finland, took part in the student project of the Central College of Art and Design named after St. Martin in London.

Pupils were offered to use Labaf's performance as an introduction for their work. Students wrote small monologues (no more than 100 words), each of which the actor then played on the camera. The final video with a length of 31 minutes was published on Vimeo.

A few weeks later, a strange “film”, in which the Hollywood actor screams, cries, waves his hands and squats, paid attention to social networks.

User Mike Mohamed (Mike Mohamed) cut out a short fragment from the video, in which Labaf calls the viewer to some action, shouting "Just do it!" (“Just do it!”), And published it on YouTube called “Shayya Labaf gives the most powerful motivational speech of all times”. The video lasting a little more than a minute quickly gained 4.5 million views.

Labaf starred against the backdrop of chromakes so that it was easier for students to impose an actor on the desired background, and it was this fact that turned the “motivational video” into a popular meme. Labafa began to insert hundreds of videos - advertising, television broadcasts and feature films. The meme was even devoted to a separate section on Reddit. Some of these videos gained hundreds of thousands of views. TJ chose the brightest of them.

Other

Labaf's fiery speech was turned into a song.

And also made a motivational video calling for useful things to do - for example, to go at home.

In one of the most popular videos using the Shayi meme, it was as if climbed onto someone's balcony.

The actor “went to visit” to the famous video blogger Francis.

And also gave a lecture at the TED conference.

And he tried to speed up the announcement of the new game from the Fallout series.

And also “forced” the head of Fifa Joseph Blatter to resign .

Recently, this is far from the first Labafa art project that attracted the attention of millions of network users. For example, in February 2014, he went on the red carpet of the Berlin Film Festival with a package with the inscription “I am no longer famous” on his head, at the end of September 2014, he ran 144 times around the Amsterdam Museum of Arts, and in January 2015 starred in the scandalous video of the SIA singer.
