One of Lema 1's favorite topics was illusory reality. Already in the “Magellanic cloud” a video plastic panorama is described, a large park of large size on a spaceship, in which an earth's landscape was recreated - trees, bushes, streams, rocks. The ship "Gaia" was gigantic, and territorially the park really occupied several dozen square meters, but thanks to the art of video plastics, it seemed that it was huge. The border separating the real park from the video plastic mirage could not be noticed. In the third year of the journey of Gay, when cases of mental imbalance began to manifest among the participants in the flight, someone turned off the video in the park, protesting against deception:
In the foreground, nothing has changed: the Canadian spruce rose behind the flower beds, the cliffs over the stream and the clay mound with the gazebo were visible then, but that all ended. Several dozen meters of stone, land and plants rested against a naked metal wall, no longer covered with a mirage of boundless expanses. Starting, like inanimate, there were trees lit by a muddy yellow light of an electric lamp, then the iron walls and a flat ceiling. The blue sky disappeared without a trace, the air was heated and motionless, like the dead, the slightest breath of the breeze did not touch the branches 2 .
In “Returning from the Stars”, El Bregg visits the so -called Merlin palace, in which he took part in a small entertainment adventure - in a boat on the river among the jungle (the action takes place in the center of the metropolis):
A trunk, a forest giant lying over the water rushing down the water that took us, which carried us, over the very surface, fell on top and formed something like a bridge. My companions fell to the bottom of the boat. I hesitated - whether to do the same to me. I knew that all this: blacks, a stream, African waterfall - only an extraordinary illusion, but sitting motionless when the boat's nose had already slipped under a huge tree stained with water, was higher than my strength. I fell with lightning speed, but at the same time I extended my hand, and she went through the trunk without touching it, I did not feel anything, as I expected, and, despite this, the impression that we miraculously avoided the catastrophe, was full of 3 .
Then the boat breaks into the waterfall, travelers are saved at the last moment, jumping to the cliff of the cliff. And when a woman falls into the water, El Bregg does not hesitate for a minute:
She had not yet touched the water when I jumped forward, aiming in such a way as to enter the wave obliquely, between the shore and the nearest rock. I thought about all this later, at my leisure. As a matter of fact, I knew that the waterfall and the air bridge were an illusion, the proof of this was the trunk through which my hand went over. Nevertheless, I jumped as if she could really die, and even, I remember, completely instinctively prepared for the icy blow of the water, whose spray all the time poured into our faces and clothes.
But I did not feel anything except a strong blow of the wind, and suddenly landed in a spacious hall on slightly bent legs, as if jumping from a height of some meter, no more. There was a friendly laughter.
I stood on a soft floor of plastic, people crowded around, some of the clothes had not dried up yet, my eyes were turned upstairs, everyone rolled with laughter.
I followed their gaze-it was some kind of devilry.
Not a trace of a waterfall, rocks, African sky - I saw a brilliant roof, and under it - a pie that is swimming at this moment, in fact, not a pie, but a kind of decoration, which resembled a boat only from above and on the side; Some metal structure was built under the bottom. There were four people in the pie, there was nothing around them: neither rowers-negras, nor rocks, nor rivers, only occasionally, thin streams of water sprayed from open pipes. A little further, like a balloon, not supported by anything, that rocky obelisk swayed on which our journey ended. From him he led the bridge to a stone ledge in a metal wall. A little above was a staircase with handrails and the door. And that's all. The pie with people twitched, rose, fell suddenly, and all this is completely silently, only the explosions of laughter were heard, accompanying the next stages of descent along a non -existent waterfall. After a moment, the pie hit the rock, people jumped out of it, stopped in front of the bridge ... 4
However, in “Returning from the Stars” with illusory reality you can meet without even visiting the exotic palace of Merlin. At first, the astronaut enters a huge metropolis, which consists of several horizons. Nevertheless, on each horizon there are multi -storey (on forty or more floors) at home, while you can see the sky, and the living, clouds go along it. It turns out that on the ceilings of the horizons there are screens on which the television recording of the sky from the very top is projected. And at home, in fact, they are not so high, only part of them are real, the rest of the floors also continue on the screens. And this is done so that the inhabitants on each horizon do not feel offended. Nothing ...
All this, however, was only an approach to the topic. And in the “sum of technology”, Lem devotes an entire chapter, which he called “phantomology”. In it, the Polish thinker wondered:
How to create reality, which for the rational creatures living in it would be no different from normal reality, but would submit to other laws? 5
Lem divided this task into two problems. The first is the creation of worlds, the second is the creation of illusions. The field of knowledge that would deal with these issues, Lem called phantomics. Generally speaking, both problems are closely related. Suppose that the created world does not differ significantly from the real one. Then the first problem is to somehow record the real world in all its manifestations. And if necessary, deviations from reality in one direction or another can be added to this record. Then the second problem is how to transfer the existing entry to the subscriber, that is, to an ordinary person. Usually we feel the world around us with the help of five senses. So, we need to influence our organs so that we do not notice the substitutions. The so -called virtual reality costume should completely isolate a person from the outside world, this costume should have a video screen, a multi -channel acoustic system and electronic devices that affect the nerve endings of the skin, causing the illusion of touch or, say, wind. In theory, you also need to add special devices that would provide taste and olfactory sensations. Really such costumes are not yet made, it is too expensive. Real glasses and gloves that provide the transmission of the necessary sensations are also far from realizing the main task of phantomatics.
Another way to solve this problem is the direct connection to the nervous paths to the brain and the transmission of the necessary sensations not through the senses, but directly to where the signals received from the eyes, ears, nose, etc. are processed. This is also a very difficult task, primarily because earthly science does not have the work of the human brain well. Nevertheless, studies in this area are in full swing and sooner or later it will become possible. Then the second problem of phantomatics will be almost solved. It will be enough to turn off the signals from the senses and replace them with pulses directly into the brain. But what needs to be served in the brain? The recording of the world that we previously registered. But this is not enough to create the illusion of reality. While the transmission of information is only in one direction, it does not fundamentally differ from the existing types of cinema, for example. And phantomatics involves the creation of bilateral connections between artificial reality and the person perceiving it. The man mentally turned his head - and the whole picture in the brain should change. Mentally brought the cutlet to his mouth - and felt it smell, bit it - and felt the taste. Etc.
It turns out that the recording of the artificial world should be very detailed. Frankly, so far, so far the existing technical devices simply cannot process such volumes of information. The most difficult thing to solve this problem, of course, is a video picture, because a person receives about 80% of information in life with his eyes. It is enough to turn your head to evaluate how complicated there should be a technique that implements the right representation of the world, providing a three -dimensional visual perception, with the translation of sharpness from the foreground to the rear, etc.
Of course, all these are purely technical issues, which over time will undoubtedly be resolved. Weighing the pros and cons of phantomatics, Lem shows: as with any other discoveries, both positive use and negative options are possible here. In particular, the creation of new types of arts that provide phantomatic visions, giving a complex gamut of experiences, providing sick people with violations of any sensory organs (blind, deaf, etc.) can be considered as positive. Fantomatics can help disabled people experience new sensations, older people can survive youth and acute sensations. It is possible to use phantomics to organize unusual training courses with a demonstration of complex experiments, virtual travels, and courses of famous professors. The active use of phantomatics will significantly expand scientific ideas about the work of the brain and psyche of people.
Although there will probably be those who want to use phantomatics with other goals. Computer games that lead people (primarily adolescents) to escapitarian worlds, phantomatic stories with pornography, sadism, crimes. Finally, the commission of criminal acts with the help of phantomatics. For example, to adjust the transition of a person to the phantomatic world and not to let him out of there. Lema was very interested in the question: is it possible in principle to understand whether you are in reality or in phantomatic? And one of the latest stories, “Matrass” (1996), he devoted to this topic. The hero of the story, a large businessman, suspects that he can be “kidnapped in virtual reality”, but does not know how to recognize this abduction. Suspecting everything and all, he only finally confuses himself, at the end he commits a murder, but cannot understand whether this is happening in reality or only in a phantomatic vision?
In the first of the “Memoirs of Ion of the Quiet” (“Strange boxes of Professor Korkoran”, 1960), the hero meets a professor who created a phantomatic reality for the simulations of people - decorated in the form of boxes, which receive signals from the drum with ribbons on which reality is recorded. A logical question arises: are we and we are also devices that signals come to? Corcoran even allows this hypothesis to explain many inexplicable facts:
Once-for a very long time-I doubted the reality of the world. I was still a child. The gloating of the surrounding objects, quiet, who did not feel it? We cannot find some trifle, although we remember where we saw him for the last time, we finally find him in a completely different place, experiencing the feeling that we caught the world with red-handed in inaccuracy, randomness ... Adults, of course, say that this is a mistake, and the child’s natural distrust is suppressed in this way ... or what is called LE SENTIMENT dujá vu 6 is an impression that in the situation is undeniably new The experienced for the first time, you were already once ... whole metaphysical systems, for example, faith in the resettlement of souls, into reincarnation, arose on the basis of these phenomena. And further: the law of pairing, the repetition of very rare events, which are so often in pairs that doctors called this phenomenon in their own language Duplicatus casus 7 . And finally ... the spirits that I asked you about. Reading thoughts, levitation and - the most contradicting the foundations of our knowledge, the most inexplicable are facts, however, rare, predictions of the future ... The phenomenon described in ancient times, which, seemed that, contrary to common sense, since this phenomenon did not accept any scientific worldview. What does it all mean? 8
After 43 years, Nick Bostr, the Swedish professor of philosophy, transgumanist, took up the same issue. In the work "Do we live in computer simulation?" 9 He gives an assessment of the computers that will be required for the implementation of the “black boxes” of Corcoran and expresses assumptions in connection with the fate of civilizations in our galaxy, following the hypothesis of the simulation of the world. Unfortunately, the stranger with the ideas of Lem makes more than one serious scientist to discover the long -open and scientifically expresses what was predicted and clarified by several paragraphs of the literary text.
Lem found a family soul in science fiction in the person of the American writer Philip K. Dick, in a number of works of which (“Three Stigmats Palmer Eldrich”, “Castle”, “In Waiting for last year”) there is also a split in reality, and it is impossible to draw a line between reality and vision. In 1975, in the series “Stanislav Lem recommends”, the novel “Kilik” was published in the Polish language with a lengthy afterword of Lem, in which the Polish writer analyzes this side of Dick's work in detail.
Since the phantomatic performance in any case is the implementation of biotechnical departure from reality, in the “sum of the technology” Lem considered the possible ways to overcome such a non -mercy of experiences. One of these methods is teletaxia - the connection of a person to such a machine that serves only an intermediate link between this person and the real world.
Telegaxia allows a person to “connect” a person to an arbitrarily selected real situation so that he feels as if he is really in it. Technically, this problem can be solved in various ways. For example, you can build an exact model of a person whose receptors (visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, equilibrium receptors, etc.) are connected to the sensory nervous paths of a person. And the same thing is done with all engine nerves. “Double” “connected” to the human brain, or, if you want, a “remote understudy”, for example, to be in a crater of a volcano, on the top of Mount Everest, in the near -Earth space, he can conduct a secular conversation in London, while a person himself is all the time in Warsaw. True, the final speed of communication signals, in this case of radio signals, does not allow this Alter Ego 10 to move too much from the person who controls them. Already, when moving on the surface of the moon, a clear effect of delayed the reaction will arise, since it takes about a second time so that the signal reaches the moon, and the same amount that it will return back. In view of this, in practice, a person who controls the “remote understudy” cannot move away from him more than a few (a maximum of ten to fifteen) thousand kilometers. The illusion of presence on the moon or in the crater of the volcano will be perfect, but completely safe, since the death of the “remote understudy” (for example, with any disaster, like a stone collapse) will only lead to a sudden cessation of the session and will not cause any damage to human health. Such a communication system will be especially useful in the study of celestial bodies and can generally find application in numerous situations that have nothing to do with the entertainment of 11 .
It should be noted that the term “teletaxia” Lem used for the first time in “return from the stars”, but there he was completely fantastic in nature, as the possibility of “instant space contact”, overcoming space almost without any loss of time, by some “remote contact”. But the fact that this method of “breakdown” of the cosmos can be realized, the heroes of the novel doubted. WARP technologies, television sporting, deritrinization-the concepts of the same category.
Although teletaxia in the “Summer of Technology” was proposed only as a use for good intentions, Lem later did not refuse to show himself that any good undertaking is easy to use for base purposes. In the novel “Peace on Earth” (1987), several pages are devoted to the description of the distants or the distances - mannequins controlled by man. First of all, they began to be used to commit marital treason at a distance, which caused a real commotion in justice, since no legislation was provided. The judges had to unravel the complex confusing balls of problems, to decide whether a distant incest, sadism, masochism, pederasty, and even narcissism are possible. But the problems did not come down only to the sexual:
For example, a certain twelve -year -old student, to whom the teacher put an unexpectedly for numerous spelling errors in the dictation, took advantage of the athletically composed distant person of his father to instruct her bruises and roll all the furniture in the apartment. It was a distant person who acts as a watchman. The model went over. The distant man, who was kept in the booth, was supposed to guard the house and garden. To this end, the boy’s father went to bed in special pajamas with sewn electrodes, it was worth only a special device to raise an alarm, and he, without getting out of bed, could already cope even with several thieves at once and detain them until the police arrived. The son pulled his father's pajamas when he was absent 12 .
Distantnikov readily began to use the criminal world. Entire chains from the distance were compiled, each of which controlled at a distance of the following. When the police tried to determine who controlled the distance that committed the crime, the connection with him was interrupted, and it was impossible to find the one who began the chain of distant mannequins.
Another method of overcoming the non -enforcement of experiences when creating a phantomatic performance Lem called the phantiper. This operation is to connect one person directly to the same ways of another. Then many people, thanks to the “phantiper” designed in a special way, can simultaneously “take part” in the actions, for example, a run of a long distance, or a climber that climbs Jomolungma, or an actor playing the role of Hamlet. At the same time, the transmission of information is carried out only in one direction, from one person to many.
A whole fan of diverging problems arises when considering the ability to connect the brain of one person to another.
In the "Futurological Congress" Lem presented a variant of a specific effect on the human brain using special chemicals. Actually, this method has been known to a person since ancient times-the use of fly agaric, hash, alcohol, drugs for a feeling of ecstasy and rapture is practiced a long time ago.
Ж. 14 . The virtual reality is now in its infancy, and its main difference from what Lem considered necessary for the successful creation of illusory reality is the poor feedback between a person and a phantomat, in the role of which the computer now acts.
