We are, of course, encouraged by Lutsenko's statement. However, until Mikhail Gangan fully undergoes the procedure and receives political refugee status, we will still fear for his fate. Because the question is, of course, political, and the threat that the leadership of Ukraine at some point, under pressure from Russia, may agree to exchange its fate remains quite real. Until Gangan receives the documents, we will actively monitor his fate and help him obtain this status.
A letter has now been sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko with a request to ensure an unbiased consideration of the issue of granting refugee status to Mikhail Gangan (the appeal was signed by Lyudmila Alekseeva, Andrey Illarionov, Lev Ponomarev, Svetlana Gannushkina, Zakhar Prilepin). An open appeal was also drawn up to the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko (signed by Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Ryzhkov, Eduard Limonov, Boris Nemtsov). In general, a lot is being done, and we will continue in the same spirit.
Now the mechanism for Mikhail to obtain refugee status has already been launched - I think that we should expect an answer in three to four weeks.
