The epoch-making discovery was made by members of the international LIGO collaboration, uniting more than a thousand scientists from fifteen countries. This project was proposed in the 1980s by Kip Thorne, Ronald Drever and Rainer Weiss. The discovery of gravitational waves occurred almost exactly a hundred years after the publication of Albert Einstein's paper, which predicted their existence.
