Name of the century (2)
kind - quick to do a good deed, to respond and help; in a good way fast, agile.
It's not often that you remember the origin of a word, but here it's fresh in my mind because it happened this week. I sent ale to one outstanding American theologian, probably the greatest living one - Thomas Altizer. He is 79 years old and was featured on the cover of Times magazine as the creator of "death of God theology" back in the late 1960s. I receive a detailed response from him, indicating that he has at least previously become acquainted with the article sent to him, in 40 minutes. And after another 50 minutes another letter arrives, with a more expanded interpretation of my message, an apology, questions, etc. And I thought: “What a great...! How kind !”
In my experience, the busiest people respond to emails the fastest. They are so incredibly productive because they do everything at once. I must admit that I answered T. Oltizer’s letters (and another one arrived) only on the third day. Because, alas, I am not so quick .
Now let's turn to the main topic of this issue:
Name of the century. Letters from readers and summaries
As you remember, a month ago, in issue 166 (7.1.07) the question was posed:
There are such expressions as the Age of Enlightenment (18th), the Age of Realism (19th), also known as the Age of Progress... Is it possible to define the 20th century in one or two words? Predict, predict the 21st?And then came readers' letters, with many wonderful definitions. I will present them in the order in which they were received, and then I will try to highlight the most accurate and original proposals, on the basis of which a generalized verbal image of the century can be compiled. The letters are given in abbreviation - only what relates to the names of the century. Where possible, the profession and place of residence of the author are indicated.

Your description of the past - and present - centuries is extremely interesting. I think that the mental images of the fluidity of great time bring consciousness to a new level of co-creation with the Word.
I offer my too poetic reasoning about the past, present and future:

I want to share my thoughts on the name of the past and
the coming centuries.
In the twentieth century, a gigantic breakthrough (or leap) was made in almost all spheres of human activity - in science, technology, and culture. There are plenty of examples: in biology - deciphering the human genome, bioengineering; in physics - fission and synthesis of nuclei, creation of new elements; in chemistry - the finest reactions, nanotechnologies; in technology - space travel, automated production; in the field of communications - a breakthrough from a detector receiver to sophisticated mobile communications, color television; well, etc. and so on.! In astronomy, in transport, medicine, media... Therefore, it seems to me that calling this century by any one parameter (space, nuclear, electronic, etc.) is not fair enough. The name Century of Power will mean something only to a fairly literate English-speaking population. Names Age of Power or The century of power is somewhat one-sided, in my opinion: our century was distinguished to a greater extent by military-technical power, and the next century may amaze with achievements of much greater power (based on nuclear fusion).
I would call the 20th century the " Century of the Great Leap Forward " (with a Chinese pronunciation) or the " Century of
Total Rush ." Or something like that.
As for the 21st century, in this century humanity will have to think hard and
take care of preserving your own home - Mother Earth - from your thoughtless,
harmful effects on nature. If we continue the same attitude towards it as now, it will be impossible to live by the end of the century that has begun... Therefore, I want this century to be the “ Century of Ecology ”.

Continuing to think about this topic, I came, as it seemed to me, to a new word. From the combination of powerful progress in the twentieth century in all areas of science and technology and large-scale aggressiveness (starting with the Armenian genocide at the beginning of the century and, further, the use of gases, concentration camps, the Holocaust, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, napalm, etc., etc.) p.) we got the word pregress = progress + aggression. But, looking at Yandex, I discovered that this word is found in the names of some construction companies, in biology (“progress and pregress”) and in expressions with an ironic connotation. True, the “literacy monitor” often expresses suspicion that this is a typo in the words “progress” or “regression.” It seems to me that the twentieth century could be called The Age of Progress . But, since the word “pregress” in the proposed meaning has not been used and is unlikely to be used, then the proposed name of the century can be considered simply a mind game. Sincerely, A.M. Ilinykh. More precisely, the combined word would look like “pregress,” but it would look even more like a typo. :-)

By the name of the century there is such a thought. Firstly, the 19th century is still not a century
as much realism, perhaps, as a century of positivism... And the 20th century in
In a cultural sense, it is rather an age of solipsism and absurdity . That's because:
Age of the Absurd
Age of Godot
Age of Relativity
And the 20th century, more than ever, is the century of dreams about the future, futurism and
fiction, therefore:
The modern century
A century of utopia .

About the name of the century:
The 20th century seems to me to be the century of DECAY : and not only of the atom,
but also, partly, traditional forms of family, connections between man and nature,
man and God. The disintegration of the world into luxury and poverty on a planetary scale.
And I would like to see the 21st century as a century of RETURN to true humanity
values.

The name of the twentieth century is the Pragmatic Century .
Motto: “Nothing personal amigo, business!”
It was in this century that the final assessment of everything and everyone in specie took place.
The essence of the thought turned into the price of the issue.
The interests of profit collapsed ideals, and monstrous explosions shook humanity.
Then the ideals and views were methodically dissected, systematized, disassembled and
reassembled. But already in the form of gears and springs of a machine for turning people into
puppets. The seats behind the levers are for sale (expensive). It was in the twentieth century that the “field of miracles” for us, Buratin, grew and finally merged with the borders of the planet. Although we sometimes shout (due to forgetfulness) on the bus: “You’re not carrying firewood!”
Everything is bought and sold: art and talent, science and scientists, ideas and politicians, morality and immorality, influence and patronage, fame and popularity. At the beginning of the century, the artist’s canvas was a “masterpiece of portraiture”; at the end of the century it became “a painting worth thousands of dollars.” This tycoon is worth this much. It costs this much to promote this star. "War for Democracy" - for mercy's sake! The budget includes both war and democracy, and the income from them. Power is bought in order to be sold profitably. Public opinion is formed accurate to the fifth decimal place in the estimate. A successful person is a wealthy person. A rich state is an influential power. He can and happily buys the resources and regimes of less wealthy countries, the future of people and their history.
“Don’t teach me how to live, it’s better to help me financially.” "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" Money is no longer a measure of material values and labor. Money is the measure of everything.

I read your article about the supposed definitions of the 20th and 21st centuries and showed it to Alexander Stepanov (author of the book “Number and Culture”). the definition of the 20th century in English as “ Century of Power He had doubts about the definition of the 19th century as the Century of Realism, but liked ”. It's more difficult with Russian equivalents. He believes it is too early to define the 21st century - at any moment, some comet will make unpredictable changes. to your definition of POTENTITY : “a mirage of the universe in a sea of possibilities” (p. 164). My “Journey” immediately responded
I also thought about a possible definition of the twentieth century, but for some reason evaluative definitions (negative, of course) kept popping into my head. I stopped for now on the definition of the Age of Experiments . At least this definition includes political, metaphysical, scientific, and aesthetic experiments (remember
at least our St. Petersburg Association of Experimental Fine Arts). True, the same A. Stepanov said that it is unlikely that such a definition concerns the essence of the twentieth century.

I am infinitely grateful to you for the “GIFT OF THE WORD”, which I learned about almost by accident.
Let me contribute to your sorrowful and wonderful work. “Mournful” - because given the current state of morals in our society, language problems are far from being the most pressing and in demand. “Wonderful” - because caring for language is giving hope for a change in situation. The past century has done a lot to enrich the language, but even more to impoverish it. The word creation of the Silver Age is almost not in demand due to the breakthrough into the living language of monstrous “bureaucrats”, meaningless borrowings, etc.
Having used the word “breakthrough,” I propose to designate the entire 20th century as the CENTURY OF BREAKTHROUGH .
On the one hand, these are positive breakthroughs (aspirations, realizations): into space, into the energy of the atom; on the other hand, negative “ places where there has been a breakthrough ”: a breakthrough in the progression of the historical process, moral consciousness and self-awareness of society; from the third, focusing on D.N. Ushakova, - “failure to fulfill on time or with due completeness
plan, task." Breakthrough of terrorism, fascism, Stalin's camps, power in general, etc.
As for the definitions of the new century, there is too little basis for them: the past six years have rather continued the tradition of breakthroughs than brought innovations.
Since I am still a completely new subscriber to The Gift, I have only yet to get acquainted with the previous issues.
I hope I will still be able to come up with words useful to your (our!) cause.

Sorry that I am somewhat late in responding to the action you have planned. Since the summer, no names worthy of attention have occurred to either the past or the present century, and later the very thought of naming them was relegated to the subcortex of the present.
Tabernacle works. However, the process on the periphery, apparently, was still going on. Because with the arrival of the next “Gift” it resumed and - there is a suspicion - with greater productivity.
The bygone century seems to me to be a century of cosmopolitanism in all senses of this capacious concept and, moreover, in their development. Born by the great Diogenes of Sinope (he was the first to call himself a cosmopolitan - a citizen of the world), this concept was in the subcortex of humanity for a long time, and it was the beginning of the twentieth century that was marked by the fact that it captured the minds of first romantics and poets, then - as it should be in history - scoundrels and paranoids who perceived world citizenship as world domination. Over the past century, the second has been almost completely eliminated and, at least within the framework of European civilization, the first has been partially achieved.
In order to name the new century, it would be better to meet in a hundred years, but since this is not yet possible, it is advisable to baptize him as a wish. I would like it to become the century of political cosmism . Or better, in order to avoid the hateful “isms” of the 19th and 20th - political cosmicism . It would seem that we are talking about an inverted term, but “inversion”, in my opinion, does what is contained in
In this sense, “citizenship” is not just global, but cosmic . It is for such a perception of him that there are, I think, all the prerequisites. During the 21st, we must finally decide where else in space “apple trees are blooming”, and either face another barbarism with younger blood (we predicted our “decline” at the beginning of the 20th), or “get wiser” faced with those who have more fully mastered political cosmos .
By the way, it would not be wrong to call the current century the “ age of Diogenes ” (in the year 2100 the first cosmopolitan will turn 2500!). This prophet (yes, much more than a philosopher!) turned out to be both more accurate in his forecast and more ancient among those widely revered. But this is already a way of speaking.

I, Alla Olegovna Popova, was born and live in Moscow. Graduated from Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, majoring in astronomy. Poet, member of the Russian Federation, author of the book of poems "The Notebook of Caprices"
The Velvet Age" (2002, "Podkova", M.) and some literary critical essays and
reviews. I am also a bit of a humorist and collaborate in the Literary Newspaper DS Club.
I saw the second half of the 20th century and can judge more about half of the century than about the whole.
Of course, the age can be called Cosmic , but it seems to me more important to realize
The noosphere and our connection with it and in it. And awareness of uniqueness, and maybe even
the uniqueness of earthly life in Space. Being a poet, I allowed myself to give a name
of our century of poetry - I called it “ Velvet ”. After the silver ringing of the "Silver
century" and the golden ringing of "Golden" - our " Velvet " seems muffled to me, not enough
heard, soft, philosophical, ironic, it has the warmth of the southern sea
coast (for me this is Crimea), without which it is difficult in our northern country. Not by chance,
for example, the poet Ivan Zhdanov moved to Crimea. But not everyone can afford it. We had
the opportunity to feel this warmth and feel the value of earthly life.
Therefore, the 20th century is not so much a Space Age as one that binds to the Earth
Century-Razluchnik . He scattered, scattered, destroyed, did not value life, love,
intelligence. We are scattered in space and time and forever stricken by “non-meeting.” IN
in poems I call him Gloomy, Deaf, Aloof - this is a reaction to
lack of demand for the individual. The Age of Global Change and Displacement - the Age
leveling of individualities. The individual in this century feels lost and
unnecessary, and finds the only consolation in the Velvet comparison of Earth and Space.
So the next century could become the Ecological century of saving the individual from
natural, ideological and ideological disasters. Finally, the individual must
"attract the love of space to yourself."
I would also like to call the 21st century Starry in the hope of great opportunities
bring remote areas of space closer to ourselves, for new discoveries and scientific achievements, and
at the same time, there are great opportunities for bringing people together, both poetic and artistic
revelations. Age of Possibilities .
Alla Popova, poet, essayist, humorist, astronomer by training, Moscow.
Это - " век прорывов " Т. Ф. Ольшанской. Мне кажется, "прорыв" - очень точное, двузначное понятие, которое характеризует напряженную энергетику 20-в. в его прорывах-взлетах и прорывах-провалах . A rare word that has retained an ambivalent meaning, positive-negative, heroic-tragic, and therefore especially suitable for the 20th century, probably the brightest and most violent in the history of mankind.
I will add that in the 21st century. this breakthrough is already turning into explosiveness , because the 21st century. began with explosions in New York, and even earlier in Moscow. And in general, the 21st century, judging by its beginning, can be called explosive. I had an article on this topic, Zero Cycle of the Century. Explosion - explosive style of the 2000s (Star", 2, 2006), from which I will quote a paragraph:
In general, the tonality and visuality of the explosion , its apocalyptic archetype are included
into the flesh and blood of our time. Everything explodes: houses, embassies, planes,
cars, ships, trains, bosses, privates, cities, powers... Explosiveness -
the basis of modern expression. Explosion is the leading style of our
time (“explosion” - explosion, respectively style - explositivism,
explositivism, in rhyme with positivism, but in meaning - on the contrary). "Big
explosion" of 2001 gave birth to the universe of the third millennium, with its divergent
wave determined the dynamics of modern civilization. Although before him, in the 1990s,
this wave spread from Chechnya to Yugoslavia, but, shrinking in the center
world capital, in the first year of the new century and millennium, it is elastic, with
the multiplied force of recoil spread throughout the world.
http://magazines.russ.ru/zvezda/2006/2/ep16.html
It seems to me that A. M. Ilyin’s convergence of progress and aggression in the name of the 20th century is very promising. Moreover, the root is the same, Latin, the participle gressus from the verb gradi, “to go, to step.” The prefix pro- means forward, a- - towards, in the direction. Unfortunately, the integration of “progress” and “aggression” into one word does not work, " "pregress " is not derived from them, and this word, as A. M. Ilyinykh himself notes, has a different meaning. But for a brief, energetic and paradoxical designation of the century, it is enough to simply combine two words, using their internal rhyme: " progressive-aggressive century ", or "the century of aggressive progress ", or "the century progress-aggression ."
You can also suggest: transgressive age , i.e. a century of all sorts of trespasses and crimes . By the way, this coincides with one of Alla Popova’s proposals: “ Century of Global Changes and Displacements ." The prefix "re-" goes to the 20th century, re- century
both in the sense of its redundancy, overcrowding and revolutions in it with events, and in the abundance of coups . This is the age of reverse destinies and criminal acts. Elena Tkach’s definition is close to this: the age of upheaval .
In general, the characteristics of the 20th century are dominated by the motives of its dynamics and energy, both positive and negative. " The Century of the Great Leap Forward " or " The Century
Total Breakthrough " (A. Ilinykh), " Age of Experiments " (B. Lichtenfeld), " High-Voltage Age " (T. Shcherbina), " Age of Decay "(T. Yamazaki), " The Age of the Absurd ", " The Age of Relativity " (A. Ukhandeev), " The Age of Homelessness " (A. Popova). Among other characteristics, its cosmic nature, omni-earthly and super-earthly nature stand out: " the age of cosmopolitanism " (V. Petrov), the " space age " (A. Popova); and its pragmatism (S. Gorbunov).
Let’s compare these definitions with those proposed in my article “The Name of the Century” (“ Nezavisimaya Gazeta ”, 10/13/1999; see also the online “ Fan of Futures ”, No.1, 11/8/2000):
Век власти-энергии (Century of Power ), Потентно-патентный век, Electro -age ( electric + electronic ), Age of will-voltage , Age of power and capacity , Mogovek , Age of expansion and globalization , Space Age, Age-Vladimir and Age-Velimir
It seems to me that a very clear image of the 20th century emerges:
energy, overflowing, breakthrough-take-off and breakthrough-failure, progressive and aggressive, combining the power of will and reason (potency and patent), taking possession of the earth and space, the energy of a leap and a jerk, disintegration and separation, shocks and displacements, pragmatics and absurdity ...
Age of Reason, Good and Holy (E. Tkach)
The century of RETURN to true human values. (T. Yamzaki)
The Age of Imagination (S. Gutor)
Age of Possibilities . (A. Popova)
Century of Ecology (A. Ilinykh)
Ecological age (A. Popova)
Electronic Age (T. Shcherbina)
The century of political cosmos , not just world, but cosmic citizenship (V. Petrov)
Starry Age (A. Popova)
The sum of these characteristics creates a dreamy image of a new golden age. Words of wishes and words of appeal predominate.
Maybe this is why the most successful, in my opinion, definition of the 21st century is poetic:
Century-OpenerIn addition to the sound-semantic game ( century , centuries , vector ), the essential idea here is that the 21st century is the century of the deepest metaphysical shifts, when the gap between consciousness and being, between the view and the given is overcome. The vector of the given is absorbed, and the unreality opens the eyelids wide. The virtual world looks at us not only from computer screens - the entire civilization, all humanly mastered existence was created by thought. This accelerated transfusion of thought into being forms psychoreality of the 21st century. Humanity is wrapped in a cocoon of its dreams and dreams, which are increasingly gaining technical reality and power. Hence the following definitions in “Name of the Century”:
age of unreality
absorbent eyelid
data vector . (A. Filimonov)
имагинАриум (лат. imaginari, воображать) - область воображаемого; все, что воображение
вмещает в себя.
To this we can also add: The Age of Thought-Being , the Thought-Being Age.
thought-being is a fusion, a place of convergence of thought and being, for example, in virtual reality, built by consciousness, but taking on an ontological dimension.
And the entire civilization, the entire noosphere (sphere of the mind) is essentially a thought that becomes being for those who think. The 21st century may become the threshold for this awareness of thought as a primary reality, not only residing in the brain, but surrounding us from the outside, like
a physically tangible reality of all embodied processes of thought (infosphere, technosphere, semiosphere).
Many thanks to everyone who wrote about the names of centuries! It seems to me that together we managed to create a clear verbal portrait of them, especially of the past century.
