2015 marks the 200th anniversary of the collection of ancient Egyptian objects assembled by the young Orientalist scholar O.F. von Richter during an expedition to Egypt in 1815. This oldest ancient Egyptian collection in Russia, which includes monuments of the highest artistic level and historical value, which survived two world wars and two evacuations without loss, is stored in our museum.
In the year of the 200th anniversary of the collection, the Kramskoy Museum is preparing a project “Eternal Egypt”, within the framework of which the permanent exhibition “The Art of Ancient Egypt” will be updated, a temporary exhibition dedicated to the expedition of O.F. will be organized. von Richter, a catalog and lecture program are being prepared for publication. Funds for this project are raised by concerned citizens (by public subscription).
A famous Russian Egyptologist is working on the project.
And what does VSU have to do with it, you ask? Yes, because the collection was previously kept at Yuryev University, and then until 1933 at VSU. And Otto von Richter is a figure worthy of study and at least a good scientific work in the department of history or cultural studies.
