Two Russian fans attempted to enter the Olympic Village. Sports fans used a truck for this purpose. However, vigilant security guards intercepted the impromptu capture team and arrested the fans. "The Russians said they just wanted to spend the night," said a spokesman for the Olympic Village's paramilitary security. Soon the Russian fans appeared before a Greek court, which sentenced them to two months in prison. However, after this verdict, the fans' lawyers filed an appeal, after which the judge softened the decision and released the Russians.
The French won gold for themselves
The Lausanne Court of Arbitration for Sport stripped the German eventing team of its gold medals. Thus, an end has been put to the protracted dispute about who should be considered the Olympic champion in this event.
Let us recall that the winners of these competitions were announced by the German riders, the French took second place, and the British took third place. But after the judges watched the video of the competition, they discovered a mistake made by German rider Bettina Hoy. For this mistake, the German team was fined 12 points and dropped to fourth place, and the victory was awarded to the French. After this, the German team filed a protest, which was satisfied, and the gold medals were returned to the German athletes. However, the French did not calm down and filed a complaint with the highest authority - the Lausanne Arbitration Court, which decided in their favor. Thus, the top three winners in equestrian eventing are as follows: France, Great Britain, USA.
The misadventures of the German team did not end there. The Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne deprived Germany of another gold medal. The same person who suffered was Bettina Hoy, who lost her individual award in equestrian eventing. Now the Olympic champion in eventing should be considered the American rider Leslie Liu, the silver medalist - the American Kimberly Severson, and the bronze medalist - the British Pippa Fannel.
Gymnastics tournament referees punished
An unprecedented decision was made by the International Federation of Artistic Gymnastics (FIG). Recognizing that the protest of the Korean team, whose athletes took second and third places, was justified, officials ruled that American gymnast Paul Hamm received the gold medal in the individual all-around undeservedly. However, the federation refused to review the results of the competition and left the gold to the American.
“The FIG cannot change judges' decisions after the fact, but after the Korean's protest was upheld, the three judges officiating at the competition were fired,” the International Artistic Gymnastics Federation said in a statement. -- The judges' mistakes were discovered.
