| Korzhanenko’s doping tests gave a positive result Yesterday it became known that doping tests “A” and “B” taken from the winner of the shot put competition, Russian Irina Korzhanenko, gave a positive result. Alas, tomorrow or in the coming days the athlete herself and our entire team will be deprived of the gold award that Korzhanenko won last Wednesday at the ancient stadium in Olympia.
Yesterday, the head of the medical commission of the International Olympic Committee, Arne Ljungqvist, confirmed rumors persistently circulating in Athens that Korzhanenko had been convicted of doping - based on the "A" sample. By evening, information arrived that left no hope. Sample "B" also turned out to be positive. Russia is again at the epicenter of a high-profile doping scandal. Women's shot put is generally a cursed discipline in athletics. Most recently, local pusher Vita Pavlysh was disqualified for life in Ukraine. She was repeatedly caught using illegal drugs. A little history: in 1999, Vita became the world champion, after exposure she was deprived of the gold medal and the award was awarded to Korzhanenko, and after some time Irina was also disqualified. Will she really soon face lifelong excommunication from big-time sports? I don’t want to believe this, but this is the harsh reality.
According to some information coming from the Olympic capital, Korzhanenko was caught using stanozolol, which belongs to the class of steroids. Officials from the Russian sports delegation yesterday refrained from commenting. What developments should we expect? The award will be taken away from Korzhanenko, given to Cuban Kumba, and bronze will automatically go to Svetlana Kriveleva, who was listed fourth in the final protocol of the competition at Olympia. So it is premature to rejoice at any victory at the current Olympics. You have to wait 36 hours or more for the results of the doping tests to arrive. Yesterday at 21.00 Moscow time, Korzhanenko’s “gold” was taken into account in the official table of awards for Russia, but today we will have to do an unpleasant arithmetic operation - subtraction.
