Today there are no competitions at the Games. Even the football players and women who started on Wednesday and Thursday took a break. And all because from 18:00 to 22:00 local time (from 11:00 to 15:00 Moscow time) in Sydney at the 110,000-seat Australia Stadium, built specifically for the Games, the opening ceremony of the last Olympics of the 20th century will take place. Naturally, not all of the 10 thousand athletes who will participate in the competition will be able to walk through the main Olympic arena (some simply have not yet reached Sydney), but spectators will see representatives of all 199 countries participating in the main competition of the four years.

At the Olympics, 13 sets of medals are awarded (track cycling - 2, judo - 2, swimming - 4, shooting - 2, triathlon - 1, weightlifting - 1, fencing - 1). I remember that the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, America, began for Russia with gold - unexpectedly for many, it was won by epee fencer Pavel Kolobkov. However, then the Russians did not shine very well at those Games, eventually losing in the total number of awards not only to the hosts, the recognized favorites of the competition, but also to the German team. Now the Olympics will most likely not start very successfully for us: the organizers tried to schedule the Games so that representatives of Australia could win in the first days. Nevertheless, Russian athletes can count on awards in competitions in shooting, swimming, cycling and fencing. For example, our 4x100m freestyle relay team, led by Olympic champion Alexander Popov, may well spring a surprise in the Sydney swimming pool. In addition, numerous qualifying competitions will begin from the very first days of the Games. In particular, the men's team gymnastics tournament starts on Saturday, where the Russians are considered favorites along with athletes from China, Ukraine, Belarus and Japan.

The sports in which the next awards will be awarded will be the same as on the first day of official starts: the only difference is that in weightlifting, women will also take to the start line along with men. Russian fans will continue to wait for news from the pool and the shooting range, where our athletes should be among the applicants for awards. Our gymnasts, whom all experts consider as the main contenders for the highest awards, start at the preliminary stage of the team competition. The Russian men's basketball team will already meet in the first round with the favorites of our qualifying group from Yugoslavia. Russian handball players will also play against the Yugoslavs, but here moral superiority will be on the side of our team, which holds the title of vice-champion of the world and Europe.
