The trial of the escape of 15 prisoners in February of this year began in the Ulyanovsk Regional Court. In addition to the fugitives, two officers from the security department of the colony, located in the suburbs of Novoulyanovsk, were also in the dock. Investigators from the regional prosecutor's office blame the prisoners for the escape and robberies that they managed to commit while free. The officers are accused of negligence leading to the escape of dangerous criminals. All of them were sentenced to terms ranging from 5 to 21 years, most of them drug addicts and HIV-positive. Investigators found that the criminals had been preparing their escape for more than a month. The prisoners used aluminum spoons to dig up an 8-centimeter layer of concrete and dig a hole 18 meters long.
