How many Belarusians want to become president Today it will become known how many politicians will run for the post of President of Belarus on December 19. The deadline for submitting documents for registration of initiative groups that will collect signatures for applicants for the highest government position is ending.
By yesterday evening, seven people had applied. Among them are the deputy head of the United Civil Party Yaroslav Romanchuk and the leader of the “Tell the Truth” campaign, poet Vladimir Neklyaev. In addition, the chairman of the board of the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises Viktor Tereshchenko, individual entrepreneur Vladimir Provalsky and nurse Natalya Starikova announced their intention to participate in the elections. Late in the evening, two more were added to them: Yuri Glushakov from the Green party and Sergei Ryzhov, an employee of a fruit and vegetable plant in Vitebsk.
It is expected that documents will be submitted to register the initiative group of Alexander Lukashenko. His intention to participate in the upcoming elections is beyond doubt. It is possible that several more people will declare their desire to run for president.
Not everyone who wants to will be able to take part in the presidential race. Within a week, the Central Election Commission will decide which initiative groups will be registered, after which the process of collecting signatures will begin on September 30, which will last almost a month. Only those politicians who manage to collect 100 thousand voter signatures will become presidential candidates. Registration of presidential candidates will take place from November 13 to November 23.
On the eve of the presidential elections, the atmosphere in Belarus is tense. Many analysts are convinced that the course of the campaign will be influenced by the cooling between Minsk and Moscow. It is possible that Alexander Lukashenko will speak out on these issues in the coming days. Olga TOMASHEVSKAYA, Minsk |
