“Sharon, prepare black bags for yourself and your fellow citizens,” representatives of the Hamas movement made such a statement in response to the murder of their spiritual leader Sheikh Admed Yassin. Some 200,000 Palestinians followed the coffins of the Hamas founder, his son and bodyguards killed in an Israeli raid through the streets of Gaza on Monday. At dawn, Israeli Air Force helicopters fired three rockets as Yassin headed home after prayers. The spiritual leader of Hamas, his son and at least 5 others were buried in a cemetery near the city of Gaza. About 15 people were injured, including his two sons.
In Israel itself, in Tel Aviv, Israeli pacifists held a protest demonstration. According to the participants of the demonstration, such Israeli military actions will only lead to extremists intensifying terrorist activities against the Jewish state. Unlike the United States, they strongly condemned Israel's liquidation of the spiritual leader of Hamas in the European Union. In Europe, they fear that the murder of Sheikh Yassin will create another obstacle to a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict.
One of the suspects in the terrorist attacks in Madrid, Moroccan Farid Oulad Ali, was released on Monday evening. Judge Juan del Olmo made this decision due to lack of evidence. A total of 13 people were detained on suspicion of involvement in the March 11 explosions. Four people who were arrested over the weekend remain in custody by a judge. Three of them are Moroccans, one is a Spaniard named José Emilio Suarez Trasorras. The Spanish press reports that 30-year-old Suarez, a former miner, is accused of supplying the terrorists with explosives.
The murderer of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh will be sentenced today. The prosecutor demands that Mikhailo Mikhailovich be sentenced to life imprisonment based on the results of a medical examination that found him sane. The lawyer, in turn, opposes such a decision. However, the court previously rejected the defense’s request to review the results of M. Mikhailovich’s medical examination. The defendant himself still claims that he did not want to kill anyone, the BBC reports. He still claims that he attacked A. Lind "on orders from an inner voice." M. Mihailovic, a 25-year-old Swede of Serbian origin, arrested and charged with the murder of A. Lind, stated that he “heard voices in his head, including the voice of Jesus, who urged him to attack the popular politician with a knife.”
