| Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has paved the way to retaining power. The October 17 referendum will allow him to run for a third term in 2006. More than 77% of voters supported Mr. Lukashenko's desire to participate in future presidential elections as a candidate for the post of head of state. From now on, not only a third, but also subsequent presidential terms for 50-year-old Alexander Lukashenko are possible - as a result of the referendum, the mention that “the same person can be president for no more than two terms” was removed from the country’s constitution.
