The State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision Service has published a memo for Russians

The State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision Authority decided to prepare compatriots for a possible outbreak of SARS, the virus of which is approaching the borders of our country. Although no cases of the disease have yet been identified in Russia, doctors have already prepared a leaflet for the population “Clinic and prevention of severe acute respiratory disease “Atypical pneumonia”. Yesterday this document was published on the official website of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision Service and sent to the regions. As the Ministry of Health explained to the Vremya Novostei newspaper, the memo summarizes the data that doctors have today.

The State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision Service warns that “an effective cure against SARS has not yet been found, and a vaccine has not been developed.” Therefore, citizens are advised to familiarize themselves with the symptoms of the disease: “The disease is characterized by a body temperature above 38 degrees, headache, sore throat, dry cough. The patient feels unwell, has muscle pain, and is shivering. Sometimes there is diarrhea, nausea, one or two times of mild vomiting. Subsequently, for several days, these symptoms persist or even a short-term improvement is observed with possible normalization of body temperature. If the disease progresses, the body temperature becomes high again, weakness increases, the patient develops a feeling of “lack of air,” breathing becomes difficult and rapid. Patients complain of chest tightness and palpitations. During this period, the disease mainly affects the lungs - pneumonia develops.”

Since the infection is transmitted by airborne droplets, those caring for patients are strongly advised to use protective masks, goggles, gloves and treat their hands with disinfectants. Patients with suspicious symptoms are recommended to immediately isolate and immediately call a doctor.

As a preventative measure, the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Supervision Service, in addition to a banal set of requirements (“regular ventilation and wet cleaning of work and living quarters, adherence to personal hygiene rules, hardening, use of restoratives and vitamins”) also recommends limiting travel to the countries of Southeast Asia. In case of urgent need to visit these states and especially China, the memo advises “to use protective masks and refrain from visiting crowded places.”
