The ruling Spanish Socialist Working Party (IRP) won a confident victory for the parliamentary elections held on Sunday in Spain. About this, as reports RIA Novosti , said the country's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Sapatero.
“The IRP won by increasing the number of its deputies compared to the parliament of the previous convocation,” the prime minister said, whose performance at a rally of supporters of the ruling social party party after the announcement of the election results was broadcast by leading television and radio channels.
He noted that the new government of Spain, which will be formed after the election and which he intends to lead, "will work in the interests of all the Spaniards, showing a special concern for the poor."
"We will work in the name of equal rights of women, in the name of the future of our youth, in the name of ensuring a worthy life to older Spaniards, and in the international arena we will contribute to the work of peace and the development of poor countries," said Rodriguez Sapatero.
According to the results of the elections, the PSRP received 168 seats in parliament (in the elections in 2004 - 164 places), its main rival - the conservative folk party received 154 places. The remaining places (in total in parliament 350 places) were divided among themselves eight more parties, mainly regional. The Communists and the Green from the United Left Coalition reduced their presence in parliament from five to three deputies.
In the elections in which candidates from 92 parties were running, 75% of voters took part.
The main rival of the socialists - the People’s Party - admitted that "obviously, the PSRP clearly prevailed," ITAR -TASS reports.
