| Medvedtseva received a suspended sentence in Italy
One of the leaders of the Russian women's biathlon team, Olga Medvedtseva (pictured), was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of one year, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport. This decision was made by the Municipal Court of Turin, where the Winter Olympic Games took place in 2006.
The athlete, who then competed under the name Pylev, was found guilty of using the banned drug carphedon. Doping was discovered in Medvedtseva’s blood after the 15 km individual race, where she finished second. The Russian's result was annulled, she returned the Olympic medal and was subjected to a two-year disqualification, which expired in 2008. After Medvedtseva returned to the sport at the 2009 World Championships, she won gold in the relay.
It should be noted that in Italy, doping entails criminal liability. However, according to Igor Nedelin, a member of the RBU anti-doping committee, a suspended sentence cannot prevent Medvedtseva from performing in Italy or entering this country. “She is a citizen of Russia, and the fact that she has a criminal record in Italy will not change anything,” Nedelin was quoted as saying by the All Sport agency.
Hayes retired on the eve of the Olympics
The famous American bobsledder Todd Hayes has decided to end his sports career and will not compete at the 2010 Games, the official website of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation reports. The reason for this was an accident in which a bobsledder got into during training in Winterberg, Germany.
Hayes, 40, was hospitalized last Wednesday with a concussion. Further medical examination revealed an intracranial hematoma, which was formed as a result of the blow. “After consulting with sports injury experts, we have concluded that continued bobsled participation may disrupt the healing process and cause further brain damage,” said U.S. bobsled team physician Eugene Byrne.
Hayes himself explained that the decision to leave the sport is one of the hardest he has made in his life. “Of course, this is not how I would like to end my career, because I feel like I abandoned my team,” said the athlete. Let us remember that at the 2002 Olympics, Hayes brought the American team its first medal after a 46-year break.
