Ecologists and geologists propose to ban construction on Vorobyovy Gory
Employees of local territorial public self-governments, geologists and ecologists propose declaring the Vorobyovy Gory an ecological reserve and banning construction in this area. “Sparrow Hills is one of the most dangerous landslide areas in Moscow,” said Pyotr Vasilenko, adviser to the Gagarinsky district assembly, at a press conference held yesterday at the Press Institute. - This is a geological risk zone. Any large-scale construction can stimulate the development of landslide processes.”
This is not the first attempt to declare this area of Moscow a recreation area. For example, at the peak of the passion for skiing, it was proposed to build a ski slope here. This time, representatives of the Gagarinsky district government undertook to protect their territory from the influx of new residents and from the damage that new buildings will cause to old housing.
In the immediate vicinity of the Vorobyovy Gory nature reserve, it is planned to build multi-storey luxury residential buildings - directly inside a residential area with existing buildings, in the courtyard of houses No. 7, 9 and 11 on Kosygina Street, next to the Orlyonok hotel. During the implementation of the project, children's and sports grounds will be taken away from nearby houses, and almost all green spaces inside the block will be destroyed to make way for construction. But the most important thing is that due to the geological features of the area, neighboring houses may “float”. “Under the new foundations, it is planned to dig a pit to a level of 1.5-2 meters below the groundwater level, and then pump it out,” explained Pyotr Vasilenko. “This always leads to sand being washed out from under the foundations of neighboring houses.” According to the adviser to the Gagarinsky district assembly, there is another danger. It is planned to build an underground two-level garage, which will become a dam that prevents groundwater. In this case, according to Mr. Vasilenko, groundwater can merge with the underground Krovyanka River, which flows in this part of the area, and seriously damage the old foundations. Both old and new houses will then crawl together towards the Moscow River.
The customer for the construction is the Institute of Chemical Physics. More than 10 years ago, this territory was reserved by scientists for the construction of laboratory buildings. But then other plans appeared and along with them promising investors in the form of construction companies. And despite the fact that the project has a negative conclusion from Moskompriroda, there is no geological examination, the construction is considered “approved” by the Moscow government.
