Alice: Madness Returns is a plot continuation of the American McGee's Alice computer game. The game tells about Alice Liddell - a girl suffering from an emotional injury caused by the death of her parents during a fire. Alice was discharged from a psychiatric clinic and during the action of the game lives in a shelter for mentally injured orphans, while hallucinations continue to visit her. To get rid of the mental injury and find out the truth about her past, the girl again falls into the country of wonderful, in which a new evil settled.

The game takes place in the second half of the XIX century. According to the plot, November 11, 1863, in the house of the little girl Alice Liddell and her family, there was a fire. Parents and older sister Elizabeth burned down, Alice herself survived, while receiving emotional injury, and, according to doctors, fell ill with a catatonia. In the death of her parents, Alice considered herself guilty of herself. The girl was sent to the psychiatric hospital Ratway, where she spent about ten years. During this time, Alice managed to mentally penetrate the country of miracles and understand herself, destroying the cherry queen.
Having come to a stable state, but still depressed, Alice was discharged from the hospital (having received a small inheritance at the same time) and entered the Haundsddch -mentally injured orgate in London in the care of a psychiatrist - Doctor Angus Bambi.
