| Khromov led the Russian boxing team
The famous Russian mentor Nikolai Khromov, whose coaching career spans 35 years, once again led the country's men's boxing team. In this field, he replaced Olympic champion Alexander Lebzyak. The reason for the castling was the results of the Beijing Olympics, where the Russian team was able to win two gold and a bronze medal, and this result did not suit the leadership of the Russian Boxing Federation.
Let us remind you that 53-year-old Khromov is one of the most experienced boxing trainers. He trained athletes of the Russian national team at three Olympics - in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens. Among his students are Olympic champions Oleg Saitov, Alexander Lebzyak, Games medalists Raimkul Malakhbekov and Alexander Maletin.
In turn, the now ex-coach of the team, Alexander Lebzyak, said that he does not feel any disappointment in connection with his suspension and perceives everything objectively and adequately. “It doesn’t matter at all who exactly heads the Russian team - Khromov, me or someone else. The main thing is that we all - individually and together - have worked and will continue to work for the benefit of Russian boxing. Yes, it was I who replaced Nikolai Dmitrievich as head coach of the national team in 2005. But when I led the team, Khromov was one of the coaches and was involved in training several members of the team. Now we'll just switch places. I will return to CSKA, where, however, I never left, I will prepare guys for the national team, for the World Championships and the Olympic Games. As before, we will work together with Khromov for the benefit of Russian boxing,” the All Sport agency quotes Lebzyak as saying.
Legkov did not require surgery
Russian skier Alexander Legkov will not undergo surgery. The head coach of the Russian cross-country skiing team, Yuri Borodavko, told a Vremya Novostey correspondent about this.
Let us remind you that before flying to the World Cup in Davos, Legkov, together with Evgeniy Dementiev, got into a car accident. As a result, both athletes received various injuries, but Legkov was especially injured, who injured his nose. “In Switzerland we turned to doctors. Experts came to the conclusion that surgery is not required, since the displacement of the nasal bone that occurs is vertical and less than a millimeter. Now the bruises on Legkov’s face have disappeared, his condition is normal, but he still has difficulty breathing. We hope that by the Tour de Ski his health will return to normal,” said Borodavko.
Yaroshenko and Yuryeva will run the “Christmas Race”
Ten teams from six countries have been invited to participate in the Christmas Biathlon Race, which will take place on December 27 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Russia will be represented by the winners of last year's competition, Ekaterina Yuryeva and Dmitry Yaroshenko. The competitors of our athletes will be biathletes from Germany, Norway, Russia, France, the USA and Ukraine. The hosts of the race will have the greatest representation, consisting of four couples at the start.
According to the regulations of the “Christmas Race”, participants of mixed teams from each country must complete nine laps around the stadium, replacing each other. At the first stage of the race, participants start with a mass start, the second stage is a pursuit race. However, after the mass start, the gap between the teams from each other is halved to add tension to the competition. For each miss, athletes are punished with a penalty loop.
Mamiashvili extended his term of office
The current president of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR), Olympic champion Mikhail Mamiashvili, was again re-elected to this post. All 147 conference delegates from 79 regions of the country voted for his candidacy. Among them are 24 Olympic champions. At the conference it was also decided that the term of office of the president of the FSBR would be increased from four to five years. Five delegates voted against this decision. Let us recall that Mamiashvili has headed the FSBR since 1997 and has already been re-elected to this position twice.
Lovchev's team could not withstand the crisis
The Moscow mini-football club "Spartak" announced the withdrawal of the main, reserve and youth teams from the competition. The reason was the lack of funding for the club for several months, the team’s official website reports. Most of the players on the main roster are already employed by other teams. In the near future, FC Spartak will cease to exist as a legal entity. The Red and Whites, who won the Russian championship in 2001, moved to Ruza, near Moscow, this season, but this move did not allow Evgeniy Lovchev’s team to withstand the global financial crisis.
Champions of Mexico City and Seoul were honored in Moscow
The All-Russian Volleyball Federation in Moscow held a celebration of the Olympic champions of Mexico City 1968 and Seoul 1988, timed to coincide with the anniversaries of these victories and the 85th anniversary of domestic volleyball. At the gala evening, the first vice-president of the VFW, Stanislav Shevchenko, on behalf of the entire federation and personally its head Nikolai Patrushev, expressed gratitude to our veterans for the victories won 40 and 20 years ago, for their faithful service to the game and the transfer of glorious traditions to a new generation of flying ball masters.
However, the word “veterans” in this regard, even in a sporting sense, is not applicable to all participants in those great victories. So, for example, the setter of the “golden” USSR national team of 1988, Irina Kirillova, could not attend the celebration for a very good reason - she is still an active player and is busy in the educational and training process of Dynamo Moscow. Legendary coach Nikolai Karpol, the creator of Seoul's success, thanked the leaders of the VFW for their care and his former players for their joint work. Those who climbed to the highest step of the podium 40 years ago were especially pleased to watch the documentary “The Hard Happiness of Mexico City.”
The VFW gave the Olympic champions from Mexico City and Seoul the opportunity to meet again and remember the glorious moments of the past, and also gave them additional bonuses. Prepared by Olga ERMOLINA and Ilya TRISVIATSKY
