A 30-second teaser has appeared for “Behind the Candelabra,” apparently Steven Soderbergh’s last film (in fact, this is the second teaser, but the first one did not contain a single frame from the film). Behind the Candelabra is a biopic of the eccentric pianist Liberace, one of the most famous show business figures of the 1960s and 1970s. Sparkly suits and wigs are inevitable - in the teaser they are worn by Michael Douglas, who plays the title role, and Matt Damon, who plays Liberace's lover. He pronounces the only word that sounds in the video - “wow”.
Since no one wanted to make Behind the Candelabra for the big screen, the film ended up being made with HBO's money. It will be shown there on the evening of May 26; There are no plans for theatrical release.
Steven Soderbergh has been planning to retire from filmmaking for the last few years to devote all his time to painting. It seems that this time the 50-year-old director is really going to end his career (or at least take a break): before he always had several projects in his work at once, and now after “Behind the Candelabra” there are no new ones in Soderbergh’s schedule films. In a recent interview, the director said that he was disillusioned with cinema and that only on television was anything interesting happening for him.
