| Vasily Kolmogorov leaves the Prosecutor General's Office Serious personnel changes may occur in the leadership of the Prosecutor General's Office in the coming days. According to the Vremya Novostey newspaper, one of the old-timers of this department, Deputy Prosecutor General Vasily Kolmogorov, resigned. For now, he is officially listed as on vacation, but, according to our information, his report has already been agreed upon with all authorities. The main candidate for the vacant post in the central apparatus of the Prosecutor General's Office is another deputy of Vladimir Ustinov - the head of the Directorate of the Prosecutor General's Office for the Southern Federal District, Sergei Fridinsky.
Vasily Kolmogorov was the prosecutor of Yakutia in 1990-1994, and then by presidential decree he was appointed deputy prosecutor general of the Russian Federation. In 2000, he began to oversee the entire investigation of the Prosecutor General's Office, and for several years he was actually the number two person in this department. It was he who oversaw the case against Vladimir Gusinsky and in April 2001 personally went to Spain, seeking the extradition of the oligarch. Mr. Kolmogorov also officially visited Switzerland, where he communicated with investigators in the scandalous Mabetex case. However, both visits cannot be called successful. Spain never extradited Gusinsky, and the Swiss could not find a common language with the Prosecutor General's Office. Later, all control over the investigation passed to another deputy prosecutor general, Yuri Biryukov, and Mr. Kolmogorov remained responsible for general prosecutorial supervision. At the end of 2001, he put forward his candidacy for the election of governor of Yakutia. Moreover, it was believed that Mr. Kolmogorov was supported by the Kremlin, but then Moscow decided to give preference to another candidate - the head of the ALROSA company, Vyacheslav Shtyrov.
According to our information, Mr. Kolmogorov submitted his resignation at the end of last year. “There’s no point in looking for any intrigue here,” said our interlocutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office. - Vasily Kolmogorov really decided to leave himself. He turned 60 years old, which is the age limit for a government official. Now he is officially on vacation, but, as I know, his request will be granted. This issue will be considered at the next meeting of the Federation Council.” Regarding Mr. Kolmogorov’s possible successor, our interlocutor noted: “Sergei Fridinsky has long proven that he is a great professional. And his place in the management of the Southern Federal District will most likely be taken by one of his current deputies.” Alexander SHVAREV |
