- Hecq is an abbreviation? Tell me how this pseudonym appeared.
Hecq was born in a desperate search for a pseudonym when I wanted to take the word "Heck" for this, reflecting the dark side of my work. But Heck looked too usual (I also wanted listeners to focus a lot of attention not so much on names as in music itself), and I changed the letter K to Q. So it happened this word.
- What do you do besides music? Does music take first place in your life?
First of all, I am Sound designer. Perhaps there is nothing more than I would like to do.
- You yourself came to "your" sound or was there music, which greatly influenced your work? In general, what kind of music did you usually listen and listen to?
I listen to very different music, without focusing only on IDM. I am pleasure in the possibility of musical self -expression of many people, from acoustic music to electronics - for example, the work of James Blackshaw (which reminds me of the acoustic version of the Stars of the LID project), also the GodSpeed You Black Emperor (one of my most beloved groups), JAGA, FinK, Tobias Lilja (In my opinion, he is one of the best innovers of our time) and Peter Broderic. Here, perhaps, a little names ...
I am also very inspired by modern classical music, such as Arvo Part, Alfred Schnittke, Gavin Bryars ...
- Night Falls is, of course, a turn away from previous creativity ...
On the inside of the cover of the disk, For My Father is written. Dedicated the album to his father?
Yes, it is! My father gave me a lot of useful things in terms of musical education, he was also always a “incorruptible” critic and attentive listener of my music. Looking at most of my published works, I invariably connect them with my father and our long conversations about music and (very different) of her perception. I considered it very important to devote the album to this person also because Night Falls has become a symbol of change in my work, he is all about some changes in my life.
- Will we still hear that Hecq, which was on albums, for example, Bad Karma and 0000? Or Night Falls - a starting point for new experiments?
This is rather a short -term turn in my work than a change of style - I’m sure that the 6th album, the creation of which I am already busy, will be different.
I think that by nature I am IDM -Ditya;). Therefore, I will always try myself around this area in music.
On the other hand, the process of creating the album is very open and free, it is hardly possible to say exactly what will happen next ...
- Some tracks of Night Falls reminded me of Kattoo's work ...
I do not know him personally, but familiar with his magnificent work. I think you mean Megrim album? A brilliant album, although I see strong differences in the musical concept and the creative approach between it and Night Falls. There is a connection in a dark, irreal atmosphere, but for me, Megrim reflects all the musical influences and ideas of the author, while Night Falls wants to hide this and be more “isolated” from everything ... I hope I said nothing wrong, Volker? ;)
- In my opinion, you get excellent tracks written with other musicians. Do not plan joint projects with someone?
Yes, but it will be secret until the release of the 6th album. ;)
- Not so long ago we interviewed Kattoo. He complained that his discs are very poorly sold, and mp3 is shaking a giant number of people. Do you have the same situation?
How do you even evaluate the situation in this industry at the moment? Does some kind of crisis associated with the free distribution of music on the network have a place?
I have never been great fans of the distribution of music on the network (legal or illegal), but this is a very important part of our world today - CDs are not sold as many would like. Having my music available for sale on services such as iTunes, Emusic and others, I see that it works very well, and it is hardly worth missing this kind of distribution from the species.
A lot of people listen to music on Myspace, Last.FM or other sites like this. Buying music, without getting up from your chair, has become absolutely normal, so why not use this type of distribution?! I think this is great - a change in thinking and habits of people can always open new prospects.
- What trends can you highlight in modern experimental electronic music? What is changing and what stands still?
To be honest, it is difficult to judge this ... A lot of interesting trends (for example, I feel that sound design has become very important), but regarding electronic music, I am afraid that history repeats itself without any serious changes. I think now there are a lot of musical releases that we listened, but have not quite understood (for me some of these works are Mirages and Haunt Me, Haunt Me Do It Again from Tim Haker ... I just listen to them while I write this letter to you;)) ...
Too many musicians are focused on the purely technical intricacies of creating music, forgetting that music, first of all, should convey emotions! I would like to hear more penetrating electronic music (such as Tobias Liljas - Time Is on My Side, which is one of the best issues for me in recent years, or Ben Frost - Theory of Machines ). For me, they unite the best of two musical worlds ...
- How is your music created, if not a secret? What iron/software do you use?
This is not a secret, in fact, everything is very simple: I use Ableton Live 7 and Resemblanging, Resembly and again resemling ... I “cleanse” the sound as much as possible, highlighting a kind of sound essence.
- For a single composition, you put the main emphasis on a high -tech Sound Design or do you prefer an intuitive approach to expressing creative thought?
I am trying to combine ... If you work the sound designer, you must do something definite, accurate - you cannot separate creativity from the ability to feel what is needed in a certain situation.
On the other hand, I try to be open, how much is possible for my work. This is a good balance, because I, doing some kind of work, is one person, in other cases I need to completely change and becomes different.
- What usually needs to be done so that you come to play at some event? (for example, to Russia)
I need to pay for the flight, accommodation and pay a small reward;).
I am quite open in this regard, as I love to perform, and I want to see more countries, communicate with a lot of people ...
- Thanks for the interview. Tell us something in the end;).
You're welcome! :)
Hmm ... finally ... Returning to the trends mentioned above, I want the music to gain great value, as it was before ... But this mission belongs to the musicians and it is we who must fulfill it! She is very serious and difficult ... so - go ahead !! :)
