GAZ began serial production of euro-3 diesel engines
The GAZ Group announced the start of serial production of YaMZ-6581 and YaMZ-6582 engines that comply with international environmental standards euro-3 at the Yaroslavl diesel equipment plant "Avtodizel".
The group bought a license for their production from Renault Trucks, a division of the Swedish Volvo Group, in March last year. “The first industrial batch of YaMZ-6581 and YaMZ-6582, a total of 61 power units,” says the company’s press release, “will be manufactured in August for the Belarusian automobile plant MAZ.” By the end of the year, Avtodiesel should produce 2 thousand 781 power units with euro-3 parameters for MAZ and the Ukrainian AvtoKrAZ.
GAZ met the stated deadlines for the serial launch of euro-3 diesel engines. Now consumers must have time to equip their cars with these engines by the new year. After all, according to the “Technical Regulations on Emissions of Pollutants into the Atmosphere,” Russia will switch to the environmental standard of euro-3 engines from January 1 next year. This means that it will not be possible to produce and sell cars in the country that do not meet this standard. And while almost all passenger car manufacturers are ready to work under the new rules, this remained a problem for factories producing some truck models. Actually, it was precisely because of this that the transition to European standards was postponed.
GAZ, which supplies more than half of the Russian market's demand for diesel engines, had to deal with this problem first. For multi-cc diesel engines (11 liters), it was possible to solve this problem only by purchasing a license for their production from Renault Trucks. Attempts to develop such a unit on our own did not bring the expected results.
As is known, the environmental standard euro-4 is already in force in Europe and the USA. The introduction of the euro-5 standard in Europe is planned for September 2009, euro-6 - for 2014. In Russia, the transition to euro-4 will take place in January 2010, and to euro-5 - from the beginning of 2014.
