The Hollywood superstar Johnny Marco ( Stephen Dorff ), a sex symbol with a planning beer belly, sticks out at the Los Angeles Hotel Chateau Marmont. It falls asleep under a sluggish striptease. Smiles stranglingly smiles at the blondes stripping his eyes. Smokes a lot. He drinks a lot. It breaks the wrist by drunk. He goes at a press conference, there he mumbles some Beliberd. He meets in the elevator, for example, Benisio del Toro -something awkward says. Sometimes he is visited by an 11-year-old daughter ( Ellie Fenning ). Together they play Guitar Hero. Breakfast. Swim in the pool. They sunbathe by the pool. They ride Ferrari. Dad and daughter are good, but she will soon leave for the summer camp.

Seven years after the “ difficulties of translation ” , Sofia Coppola returns to the enveloping style of expressive sketches and sketches. Stephen Dorff, of course, specially selected for the role of a movie star larger caliber (in order to avoid the notorious effect “Actor plays himself”), constantly stands on the balcony with a swollen face, slowly sipping a cigarette, lounging on the sofa, cuts circles on a car with the speed of a person for a long, long time, where it is indifferent, where to stop. All the same as in the “difficulties of translation”, the world in which everything is done either before you or for you, it remains only to maintain the illusion of activity in public and, accordingly, the illusion of rest. Everything seems to be the same, except for one nuance that the “difficulties of translation” are sadder, and “somewhere” is more pessimistic. In the most terrible and at the same time the most terrible scene of the film, make -up artists walled the hero’s head into a clay mask and leave him for a long time and hard to inhale the air alone. “Look what you are now” - they say on the return, in the mirror - an artificially aged face. This is, in fact, the whole film. Here, even the final smile, contrary to, probably the director’s plan, seems completely tormented. A strangely emerging and suddenly disappeared daughter with an already fading brilliance in her eyes somehow helps to brighten up a monotonous process of bewilderment of life. Relations with her are fundamentally static: they are hardly able to give each other, except for themselves-okay, you can die together by the pool. Or you can call the guitarist to the house, listen to the song ( Johansson and Murray lived more modest, they sang in karaoke). You can order ice cream. And so on. He, like seven years ago, Bill Murray, watches the TV in an incomprehensible language. She (the ironic paraphrase of the famous scene from “photo -religion”) plays tennis without a ball.
Such a movie would be shot by a young Jim Jarmush if he would be locked for an excessive love for the proletariat in this very five -star Hollywood hotel. He had such a wonderful movie “ Stronger than Paradise ”, also about the fact that the longing of being is incurable, and the change of environment and space are methods, no matter what they say, palliative. In words, this is what you can do, it sounds corny and secondary. Coppola, alas, is also repeated, and her new film still seems to be a pretty addition to the film to another, what is more deserved. Like, something so bright and sad happens that you can’t convey in words. And not only with young girls and aging actors. It also happens to young people. And even with small children. Well, yes, we know. In general, not people like that, life is like that.
