Both matches of the third game day of the playoffs ended with the same score, repeating the results of the first meetings of these series. Detroit relied on shots from behind the 3-point line, and eight of their 19 attempts were successful.
Utah and Russian national team forward Andrei Kirilenko became completely invisible in the game. If in the first meeting against Houston he scored only two points, then in the second match the St. Petersburg basketball graduate did not score anything in 17 minutes of net time. All three of his field goals, including one long shot, fell short. Carlos Boozer (pictured) shined for the Jazzmen with 41 points. For Houston, the most productive were Chinese center Yao Ming (27) and Tracy McGrady (31+10 rebounds).
“Vancouver” scored two goals into the empty goal of “Dallas”
Vancouver scored the third and fourth goals in the last match of the longest series of the 1/8 finals of the Stanley Cup into the empty net of the team of Russian defender Sergei Zubov. Dallas, which opened the scoring in this match, losing 1:2, changed its goalkeeper Marta Turco two minutes before the siren about the end of regulation time. Within 16 seconds of each other, Taylor Pyatt and Brian Smolinski hit an unprotected target.
In the quarterfinal series up to four victories (according to the “2-2-1-1-1” scheme) in the East, “Buffalo” - “Rangers” and “New Jersey” - “Ottawa” meet. In the "West" Anaheim - "Vancouver" and "Detroit" - "San Jose" will meet. The matches will take place from April 25 to May 9.
The best sniper of the first round of the playoffs was Zach Parise, the son of Jean-Paul Parise, a participant in the 1972 USSR-Canada Super Series. The New Jersey center scored six goals in six games. The highest score in the “goal plus pass” system is for another Devils player, Scott Gomez, 9 (2+7) points. Ilya TRISVIATSKY
The Russians suffer defeats on the courts of Barcelona
At the ATP tournament with a prize fund of 850 thousand euros, held on clay courts in Barcelona, the first day of play was not very successful for the Russians. In the opening round, Evgeny Korolev lost to the Italian Filippo Volandri - 0:6, 4:6, Igor Kunitsyn failed to cope with the German Benjamin Becker - 6:7 (2:7), 4:6, Dmitry Tursunov also lost to the Spaniard in two sets Oscar Hernandez - 4:6, 4:6. Only “qualified” Yuri Shchukin, who entered the court in the morning gaming block, as we already reported, defeated the Austrian Werner Eschauer and will continue the fight in the 1/16 finals, where he will meet with the “seeded” number two Nikolay Davydenko. Last night Marat Safin measured his strength with the little-known Italian Simone Bolelli and was a fiasco - 4:6, 6:7 (5:7).

Arveladze is going to hang up his boots
The 34-year-old leader of the Georgian national football team and Alkmaar captain Shota Arveladze will most likely end his career after this Dutch championship. The forward himself stated this on the eve of the last round of the championship, in which his club meets an outsider, Excelsior, on the road. If they win, Arveladze's team will become the champion of Holland, even if they are tied on points with Ajax and PSV Eindhoven - on the best goal difference. Several years ago, Arveladze already won (with Ajax) the Dutch championship. He also won the Scottish Championship twice while playing for Glasgow Rangers. This season, the striker, who is experiencing his second youth, scored five goals for the Georgian national team and 15 for the club. In total, he scored 24 goals for the country's national team in 58 games. However, due to injuries, Arveladze is ready to say goodbye to football. Mikhail VIGNANSKY, Tbilisi
The young Gullivers completed their championship
The final round of the Children's and Youth Basketball League (JBL) championship has ended in Khimki. For the first time in the history of the tournament, which united the strongest young basketball players in the country, the main prize was won by Khimki juniors. The fate of the championship title was decided on the final day of play - in a meeting between the hosts and their peers from the capital's RVC. The match between the two leaders turned out to be truly combative and uncompromising: as a result, luck favored the Khimki team, who snatched victory in the last seconds - 70:69. Having won five victories in five matches, the basketball players from the Moscow region won the gold medals of the Junior Youth League. “Silver” went to RVC, “bronze” to CSKA, and the subsequent places were taken by Moscow “Dynamo”, Novosibirsk “Sibirtelecom-Lokomotiv” and Perm “Ural-Great”.
The completed Youth League Championship is the sixth in a row. Over the years of its existence, this competition has gained enormous popularity and social significance - largely thanks to the general sponsor of the league, JSC Lebedyansky, whose investment in children's and youth sports is already bringing results. Suffice it to say that at one time such well-known players as Anton Ponkrashov, Nikita Kurbanov, Nikita Shabalkin, Vitaly Fridzon (all are players of the national team) came out of the DYBL. In addition, it is on the basis of the Junior Youth League that Russian junior national teams are formed, which in recent years have successfully performed on the international stage. Thus, in 2005 and 2006, our men's and women's youth teams alternately became European champions. The current generation of Junior Youth League (players born in 1989-1990) will have to defend the honor of Russia at the youth (under 20 years old) and junior (under 18) championships of the continent, which will be held this summer in Italy and Spain, respectively.
