
The merits of the new European currency of the euro are marked on Thursday by the authoritative international prize of the German city of Aachen, also known as the Karlspreis Zu Aachen Prize.
According to RIA Novosti , this award, starting in 1950, is noted the merits of individual figures and groups of persons in strengthening the unity of Europe.
Among the laureates of the past years is the former Chancellor of Germany Conrad Anauer, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and ex-president Bill Clinton.
This time it was first awarded to a political and economic project. The solemn ceremony took place in the crown hall of the town hall of the city of Aachen - the ancient capital of the empire of Karl the Great - in the presence of more than 1 thousand honored guests from different countries of the continent.
The certificate and medal of the prize was accepted by the president of the European Central Bank, VIM Duisenberg. He indicated that "the currency of the euro contributes to the new chances in the development of Europe." Queen of the Netherlands Beatrix also took part in the celebrations.
