The enterprise, owned by Indian businessman Sunil Gandhi, will annually produce diamonds worth over $20 million. “The administration of the Primorsky Territory fully supports this project, since a similar experience already exists in Yakutsk,” says Primorye Vice-Governor Viktor Gorchakov, meaning successful work in the capital of the Sakha Republic of the Choron Diamond factory, which belongs to Sunil Gandhi’s brother Rajesh.
The factory that opened in Vladivostok was named “Primorsky Diamond”. The authorized capital of the enterprise at the first stage will be about 500 thousand dollars with 100 percent Indian capital. Raw materials for the factory will be purchased in Yakutia. Indian stone cutting technology will be used in production. Round diamonds, in particular, will have 57 facets. Diamonds are intended for use in the jewelry industry.
Geological developments carried out in Primorye show that the region has rich deposits of semi-precious stones. Scientists also believe that there may be diamond deposits in the region. The Gandhi brothers are ready to invest their personal funds in the development of some of them. Vice-Governor Gorchakov, justifying the choice of foreign partners, especially noted that India is the main supplier of small diamonds to the world market, and the cutters of this country are considered unsurpassed specialists in their field. Indian masters will teach Russians the art of cutting stones. But by the end of this year, the number of Vladivostok residents employed in production should reach 100 people.
The Primorsky Diamond factory was created on the basis of the production facilities of the Varyag defense plant, which was until now considered a closed enterprise and specialized in the manufacture of electronic systems for nuclear submarines and destroyers. At the first stage, it is planned to place 20 grinding machines here, each of which is capable of producing $2 million worth of diamonds annually. Dmitry CHERNOV, Vladivostok |
