| UN Secretary General Kofi Annan arrived yesterday on a visit to Turkey for negotiations on the Cyprus unification. “This is a defining moment for Cyprus. The time has come,” he said. Today and tomorrow he will have negotiations in Greece and Cyprus itself. However, Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis said that Cyprus, apparently, will have to join the EU in mid-April without signing the reunification plan proposed by the UN. It is extremely unlikely that the Turkish and Greek parts of Cyprus will agree on unification by the UN deadline of February 28. Kofi Annan allows this deadline to be extended by only a week.
