Then Dmitry Rogozin and his supporters removed him from this post. However, he himself later had to give up the leadership position to Alexander Babakov. Even before this, Mr. Rogozin had a conflict with Mr. Baburin, as a result of which Mr. Baburin created a separate faction , where he took his comrades from Narodnaya Volya and SEPR. This did not contradict the regulations, since both Narodnaya Volya and SEPR entered the Duma as part of the Rodina bloc, which means they had the right to create their own factions.
Thus, two “Motherland” appeared in the Duma: Baburin’s “Motherland” (“People’s Will” - SEPR) and Rogozin’s, and later Babakov’s “Motherland” (“People’s Patriotic Union”). And just before the New Year, Baburin’s “Motherland” was replenished by the leader of the “Patriots of Russia” party, Gennady Semigin, who at one time was accused of attempting a split by the communists , as well as his associates. But it was too early for Sergei Baburin to rejoice: at the very first meeting of the faction, the Semiginians transformed the name into “Motherland” (“People’s Will - SEPR - Patriots of Russia”) and elected Gennady Semigin as their leader. Some of Mr. Baburin’s supporters also came over to their side, such as Narodnaya Volya party member Sergei Glotov .
As a source in the apparatus of Rodina (Narodnaya Volya - SEPR) told Vremya Novostei, “the re-election of the leader resembled the seizure of a faction, and individual work was carried out with the deputies.”
The Chairman of the Committee on Regulations and Organization of Work of the State Duma, United Russia member Oleg Kovalev, believes that a very difficult situation has developed in the faction, and it is not clear how to understand it. “Now we are waiting for our committee to receive the relevant papers from Baburin and his supporters,” the deputy said.
Meanwhile, Sergei Baburin and Vasily Shestakov signed a memorandum on Wednesday to unite Narodnaya Volya and SEPR into a single party. It is expected that negotiations on the mechanisms of unification and the preparation of the program and charter of the united party should be completed before February 1. The name of the party - a working version of "People's Patriotic Union" - should be adopted at the unification congress in March.
Gennady Semigin is also going to unite like-minded people. The People's Party, the Russian Revival Party, the Social Justice Party and the Social Democratic Party are ready to join him and his Patriots of Russia party.
To date, the most successful project of the united left (it is not for nothing that the president himself blessed this union) is “A Just Russia,” which includes the Party of Life of Sergei Mironov, the “Rodina” party of Alexander Babakov and the Party of Pensioners of Igor Zotov.
